As a potent Hurricane Ian made landfall in southwest Florida, the top executive at Florida Power & Light warned residents in the storm’s path to expect “life-changing effects” from widespread and catastrophic damage to the state’s electrical grid that will take days, and in some cases weeks, to fully fix.
Speaking on a livestream from FPL’s Palm Beach County emergency command center, President and CEO Eric Silagy said the company expects it will have to completely rebuild sections of its electrical system given Ian’s massive size and powerful winds, as well as the extensive rainfall and flooding it’s forecast to generate.
Silagy said that damage will not be limited to the coastal area taking a direct hit from Ian’s eyewall on Wednesday afternoon, but will be seen along its full path as the storm thrashes its way across the state to the Atlantic Ocean, where it’s expected to emerge Thursday.
“There are sections of our territory we will not be able to repair, we will have to rebuild,” Silagy said. “I can’t stress the difference that makes. Rebuilding can take many days or weeks.” Get unlimited digital access Subscribe now for just $2 for 2 months.
Only a couple of hours after Silagy spoke, the number of utility customers in Florida without power soared well past 1 million, and state officials said they expect those numbers to grow exponentially as the storm makes its way across the state. Around midnight, the number of Florida users without electricity stood at about 2.1 million, according to PowerOutage.us, a website that compiles outage numbers.

so much for EVs ... at least with ICE cars, small gens can power gas station pumps ...
can you imagine if ALL of the 2 million without power had only EVs to drive?
The Enemy Media is going to paint this as DeSantis’ ‘Katrina.’
Place your bets. It’s a sure thing! *SPIT*
“Gas Pumps also require electricity.”
which can easily be powered with small gen sets ...
“Not the 5 gallon containers full in my garage.”
The farming operations are probably happy with their 300 gravity feed gas tanks too. If they didn’t blow over.
The 36 gallon tanks available in F150s are nice too.
We became Tampa Bay fans when Brady and Gronk were both there.
Now, we are going back to being Bills fans.
And warped priorities...
The vast majority of EV owners are smart. 78% of them also own ICE vehicles.
Electric car owners keep Unicorns in their back yards for just such occasions. The excrement charges electric vehicles.
;-)
I don’t blame you. Your QB is pretty impressive.
I grew up in gas station. We used to take turns with a diaphragm hand pump from the main tanks into 55 gallon drums and then dump from the drums into five gallon cans to meter and dispense it.
In Alabama to this day we still laugh about an event almost 4 decades ago when cable TV (back when it was affordable) went out in the middle of the Iron Bowl. You've never seen so many people scramble around in their basements from us all looking for old rabbit ear antennae. LOL
If you think hatred can't bring people together, for a year both Bama fans and Auburn fans were united in our hatred of the cable company. LOL
I can only imagine.
“78% of them also own ICE vehicles.”
for now ... but ICE has been outlawed in the future for most of the U.S. population ... what then? skate boards?
Let me know if your M-I-L needs anything.
