Over 2 million Floridians without power — as Ian causes major damage to state’s power grid
https://www.miamiherald.com ^ | UPDATED SEPTEMBER 29, 2022 10:52 AM | BY ANDRES VIGLUCCI AND REBECCA SAN JUAN

As a potent Hurricane Ian made landfall in southwest Florida, the top executive at Florida Power & Light warned residents in the storm’s path to expect “life-changing effects” from widespread and catastrophic damage to the state’s electrical grid that will take days, and in some cases weeks, to fully fix.

Speaking on a livestream from FPL’s Palm Beach County emergency command center, President and CEO Eric Silagy said the company expects it will have to completely rebuild sections of its electrical system given Ian’s massive size and powerful winds, as well as the extensive rainfall and flooding it’s forecast to generate.

Silagy said that damage will not be limited to the coastal area taking a direct hit from Ian’s eyewall on Wednesday afternoon, but will be seen along its full path as the storm thrashes its way across the state to the Atlantic Ocean, where it’s expected to emerge Thursday.

“There are sections of our territory we will not be able to repair, we will have to rebuild,” Silagy said. “I can’t stress the difference that makes. Rebuilding can take many days or weeks.” Get unlimited digital access Subscribe now for just $2 for 2 months.

Only a couple of hours after Silagy spoke, the number of utility customers in Florida without power soared well past 1 million, and state officials said they expect those numbers to grow exponentially as the storm makes its way across the state. Around midnight, the number of Florida users without electricity stood at about 2.1 million, according to PowerOutage.us, a website that compiles outage numbers.

Be fair, Gas Pumps also require electricity.

Florida knows how to handle stuff like this, although this is a really big one. Before the storm made landfall the state had mustered more than 10,000 utility workers and vehicles in Lakeland to get on the repairs as soon as it was safe to do so.... There are reports already this morning that more than half a million have had power restored. It’ll take a while for sure, but it’s not like the State (or DeSantis) put off thinking about how to cope.

Can’t the same be said for people with generators?

Try using one to charge your car.

I suppose that's my question, are there generators that can charge EVs? I don't know.

Seriously, I drove home the next morning and thought it would be months before we got all those wires back up. We had crews from Canada and the Midwest come in. It was about 95% up in a week.

People working together, with a purpose, is amazing to watch.

I was on the Cape for Bob... It’s been a long time since MA has been hit by a big storm. We seem to be a bunch of pampered babies these days, it’s Armageddon when teenagers can’t find their cell phones.

One distraught EV owner, whose battery died, was heard yelling:
My EV for a horse!

So far, no takers.

I guess it works, but slowly: Using a 4000W generator, it will take you 24 hours to fully charge the vehicle. This can mean using several tanks of gas. It is generally practical to use just about one gas tank to charge the vehicle to reasonable power levels rather than do this for a whole day.

In short, yes. But it will take all day. Not sure you want to “spend” your generator time on charging a car like that.

Gloria beat up the South Shore pretty badly. We were spared that time. But we sent crews to Brockton for a couple weeks.

I don’t remember which one hit us, but it would have been in ‘93-96 time frame.

Masks prevent the spread of hurricanes and we all know DeSantis prevented that form happening. His hubris brought this on. He ignored the silence on Covid like he ignored the science on Hurricanes.

All this and more tripe coming to a Charlie Crust near you.

Sucks to be a “proud” EV owner.
