My children were born in New York but now live in Texas. I sometimes wish we had never moved.

My children were born in New York City. As toddlers, they played in the American Museum of Natural History, joined baby-music classes on the Upper East Side, gnawed on street pretzels, and threw leaves in the air in Central Park.

I had originally expected to be a Manhattan mom, but over the years I've come to accept they are now southern kids living in Houston, Texas.

They wear shorts year-round, wear sunshine on their skin, crave Whataburger, have never made a snowman, and get pumped for Go Texan Day, dressed in boots, vests, and hats — it's like Halloween twice a year in my eyes.

It wasn't my idea to move from a comfortable life in Manhattan to Houston, my ex's home city. I thought it was supposed to be temporary, but I was wrong.

Texas showed me BBQ festivals, square dancing, bluebonnets, and the flaws of my marriage. Now with a Texas divorce decree and the kids settled in school with friends and activities, it seems like I'm stuck here for good, or at least until my kids grow up.

-snip

There are also experiences that remind me I'm in Texas, like a dead snake's skin being tangled in my daughter's scooter wheels, a "beware of alligators" sign at a playground, armadillo sightings, a lack of road shoulders, and guns-and-ammo signs next to a pet store.

I worry about my kids' safety wherever they go while living in a state with historically loose gun laws. I worry about what women's health will be like for my daughter's generation. I debate on how young of an age I will tell her about contraceptives because of the war on women's access to care and treatment in this state.

I will give the woman credit for one thing, she accepts that her children identify with Texas and don’t want to be in NY.

She doesn’t say it, but she may also want their father to be part of her children’s life.

Otherwise, she is pretty messed up. It is easy enough to see snow with a cheap flight somewhere. Heck, we got it here in Arizona just by driving up to the Grand Canyon in January.

Typical frustrated female from NY. She is upset that no Texan in his right mind wants to put his dipstick into that engine of crazy and liberalism.

She doesn’t even realize that “dead snake’s skin” is shed skin and the snake is likely alive and doing well.

Those liberals sure are smarter than the little people!

I suspect your neighbors wished you had never moved as well.

Oh, BS. Houston is home to some of the finest healthcare in the world. And countless amounts of contraception is freely available at Walgreen's and CVS.

Or, maybe the Manhattan Karen is speaking in Libcode ...

Life’s too short to be unhappy. Pack it up and head back to your utopia.

You’ll want to see the Fall foliage in NY, so make that move well before November 8th just to be safe.

Oh, yeah, Houston could explain why she feels less safe. Though I think that’s a toss up.

Maybe your kids will grow to be real men and not Birkenstock wearing New York pussies.

Raised in New Zealand I only made one snowman my whole childhood, green due to the scrapings off the grass ...it seldom snowed there ...

I started out a Christian and Conservative and remain so and I survived ...

This winter take them somewhere they can experience the cold and build a snowman ...

People who were born and raised in the city do have issues in rural or even semi-rural areas.

I grew up in the city but my father would send me to my grandmother's farm in Alabama every summer, which completely changed my life. It gave me a love for the outdoors and made me comfortable around guns and wild animals.

Some people from the city never get that experience when growing up.

I go camping a lot up in New Hampshire, tents and all. There is a surprising amount of adults who have never done that and would never consider sleeping outside in a tent. Even when they come up for a day trip, they freak out over the bugs like spiders and wasps. The noises animals make in the woods spook them. They are literally scared out of their minds.

” dirty, and nasty everywhere.”

My overwhelming memory of when my parents took me there as a kid to visit grandparents.

Filthy place.

TX Divorce decree, chances are there is a clause keeping her from moving her kids to far from her former husband.
