Journey to the World-Record-Shattering 4.4 Mile Long-Range Rifle Shot
Scott Austin, Shepard Humphries, and half a dozen friends surpassed the previous record for longest target hit with a long range rifle on September 13, 2022, but their journey started long before that day.
Scott and Shepard both have a passion for shooting rifles at long ranges. Extreme long ranges. For many years they have operated Nomad Rifleman, a boutique extreme long range shooting experience, out of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. In 2020, they guided a client to set the Wyoming state record for longest hit on a target at a whopping 3.06 miles!
Not long after helping their Nomad Rifleman client break the Wyoming record, Scott, Shepard, and a group of their friends who also share a passion for long range shooting decided to attempt to set a new world record extreme-long-range shot; the record at that time was four miles. But this time it wasn’t business; it was for the challenge, fun, and bragging rights.
In late 2020 they began planning, with a target date of June or July 2021 for the attempt. A shot like this requires a custom-made, one-of-a-kind rifle. Because of the complexity of such a build, with custom parts coming in from Canada, New Zealand, Arkansas, South Dakota, Washington and elsewhere, there were many challenges to overcome in trying to get the rifle completed on time. Summer of 2021 turned out to be wishful thinking; the rifle was finally completed in May of 2022.
I was going to say I didn't know they piled it that high in Boston. Seriously though, those boys have a strange and expensive hobby I wouldn't indulge in. Just tweaking out-of-the-box rifles gets steeper the more you let it sit on your mind ("Maybe if I got this part in titanium" etc. etc.).
What is the ONE shot World Distance Record???
That would be much more impressive than a 69 shot record....
And you *are* correct to pay tribute to the guys who *did* serve there...IMO (not that my opinion means much when it comes to warfare) they were badly betrayed by their leaders in DC and,as a result, suffered *much* more than they should have.
“...to listen and watch for impacts from missed shots...”
_________
A position akin to javelin catcher.
The Bill Clinton administration had a designated javelin catcher. What was that guy’s name again?
Wow!
A match M-14 is capable of much better precision than that - in 1976 I fired my Marine Corps match M-14 at a standard 12 bullseye at the Puuloa Rifle Range in Hawaii and fired 34 consecutive V-ring bullseyes. I don't think that anyone has beaten that record since then.
We used iron-sighted M14s for 1,000 yard competition back then.
I also carried an M-14 the whole time that I was in Vietnam - would not accept the M16 when that damn thing was pushed on us.
That should be long enough to circumvent Gates of Hell’s body guards.
69 hots 1 kill
100%. I am referring to the GI M-14. They can definitely be accurized. Synthetic stocks, hand loads, a good barrel and trigger can dramatically improve their performance. Army was still fielding them to a degree in a designated marksman role in Iraq.
Obviously not a ‘Nam vet (dad was, i’m a generation later) but the first generation of M-16’s to land in country were apparently horrible and got guys killed. Sounds like you were there in ‘66-‘67?
In addition, the M-14 was a better rifle for Drill and Ceremony.
Lucky? Did you even take the time to read the damn article? Probably not.
1,092 MOA up and 17 MOA left. Do you even know what an MOA is in regards to rifle scopes?
Here, check out the rifle and notice the scope alignment.......
Read the article......It's an easy read
Exactly. I’m not impressed that he got it in 69 tries. 10 would have shown skill. 69 is just pure luck.
Sorry. I was (and am) reading several other articles. I got into it as much as my interest allowed. 😎
My post was just me “thinking out loud” as a response to the responses I saw here.
I was with some folks yesterday that were Consistently shooting .22 long rifle at
10x12 inche Plate from 300 yesterday.
At Will,Consistently...!?!
I know it’s my turn Next.
He wasn't shooting for groups Hartley, he was shooting for one target hit from 4.4 miles........
Here I though you might have read the entire article. Silly me.......Sheesh!
Sounds like Saturday in Chi-raq
Exactly,,,
Caliber Please.
Go ahead, throw your lead 4.4 miles. Doubt you'll even come within 200 yards of something you can't even see..........
