The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Made some poppers yesterday, my favorite filling is cream cheese, sausage and parmesan. Top each one with a short slice of bacon.
So sweet! :)
You’re up early; I thought 6:30 am was early enough for me, today. More apple picking and garden gleaning, today. A CRISP 51 degrees this morning - it was mid-70’s, yesterday. I am SO READY for Fall. :)
My favorite ‘Fall’ Poem:
Autumn Gold
by Gladys Harp
I am rich today with autumn’s gold,
All that my covetous hands can hold;
Frost-painted leaves and goldenrod,
A goldfinch on a milkweed pod,
Huge golden pumpkins in the field
With heaps of corn from a bounteous yield,
Golden apples heavy on the trees
Rivaling those of Hesperides,
Golden rays of balmy sunshine spread
Over all like butter on warm bread;
And the harvest moon will this night unfold
The streams running full of molten gold.
Oh, who could find a dearth of bliss
With autumn glory such as this!
I like the poem! :-)
Up early because we have company coming today. I had been waiting for the cooler weather to move in before I got on the mower ... everything is (was) really shaggy. So, the call that company was coming was around 11 am yesterday ... got on the mower at 5 & mowed until almost dark. It was actually pleasant out there, especially with the breeze from going FAST on the mower! Entire ‘yard’ is cut, field in front of the house & both entrances, plus half the front pasture, where my garden is located. The garden is really grown up - with so much mowing done, I can tackle cleaning it out this weekend.
Made the 2nd batch of jalapeno poppers yesterday. I saved a couple for breakfast ... pigged out on most of the batch before I got on the mower! I love those things - maybe one more batch, but trying to let some go red for jelly ... not much happening yet. My SIL gave me 3 red ones off her plant - need 10-12 for jelly.
Watching the weather - Fiona not an issue for us, but the next one looks like it will bring major rains up the east coast, if the weather patterns hold. Probably wind, too. Hopefully, there won’t be any power outages. This should happen Oct 1-2 (weekend after next) so I’ve got to make sure some things are in place. I might be getting my half a hog that weekend, too .... gonna’ be busy that weekend!
Since you still have apples ....
Apple Pie Jam Low Sugar Recipe

Thanks for the recipe. Sounds great! I’m going to modify it for freezer use - which is what I do with most of my jams and butters.
I got all the mowing done, yesterday. It was the perfect day for it. Rain possibly on Friday into Saturday here, and I’ve got plenty of other stuff to do. Broke all land-speed records and finished in an hour and forty-five, when it usually takes me a solid 2 hours to mow. ;)
This season, for sure, I realize that I’ll need more than ONE Jalapeno plant next year, based on our now-fondness for those Poppers. :)

Watch out for that dangerous mulch/potting soil! We’ve have piles of chips from trees we had taken down - they’re out in the field in an area where nothing is around. They can get a little “hot” when decomposing, but we’ve never had a fire.
Spontaneous combustion of mulch and potting soil starts fire, destroys Virginia barn

I never mentioned quantity. 1 Block cream cheese, 1 lb. Ground sausage original type recipe, 1 cup parmesan cheese.
Not slicing it open today but I can get a picture of the inside a couple of days.
You are correct. Figs are a good choice for my food forest. I have two trees. They’re babies and did not like the hot sand this summer, but still alive. I suspect a growth spurt in the fall. I will check out the links. Thank you.
Time and place? I’ll bring the wine.
I think maybe you wrote to the wrong person.
Yep. Happens around here from time to time. If you put your baled hay in the barn and it’s not COMPLETELY dry, you can easily have BIG problems.
I know a dairy goat farmer and when he has a goat that passes (that they don’t butcher for some reason) he has been known to compost the goat because his compost pile gets that hot!
I also woke up one morning and there was a HUGE dead Billy Goat on the driveway. Turns out a local guy had one that passed and Beau wanted it for Coyote/Bobcat/Eagle bait. (No Eagles were harmed; they’re just for watching!)
Would’ve been NICE if ‘someone’ had TOLD ME, instead of me finding it on my way down to do morning chores. Ugh!

The hybrid variety I'm crazy for is 'Grandma's Pick' which is a cross between the CG and a Beefsteak.
Hey thanks will keep you posted when we slice it.
If you’re the person with the cream cheese and sausage stuffed poppers I have the right person.
