AARP Membership?
Self

Posted on 09/15/2022 10:03:18 AM PDT by far sider

My wife has been wanting us to join AARP for some kind of prescription or medical benefit. I don't want to because....AARP. Is this a good idea financially? Does AMAC have anything comparable? Thanks.

Aarp screwed my mother out of a good policy she had and it cost our family thousands of dollars.

Damn them to hell!

“””AARP has a very good Medicare supplemental plan.

You have to join AARP for one year to qualify.

After that you do not have to renew AARP to keep the supplemental.

It was (IIRC) $12 one time…”””

My exact experience as well.

I do not know if AARP supplement plan sends money to AARP organization.

I joined AMAC but I already had a good insurance plan before but check theirs out in the link. We did get their medical transport plan after a friend called for an ambulance and it cost over $3k in pre-Biden dollars.

I considered a one-off $12 fee a good trade off.

Will AARP send 25-50 cents of that to some lib cause? Likely.

But I use the Post Office…
Sometimes Amazon
Sometimes Walmart
ETC

And we know they support libs bigly…

They’re anti-Second Amendment and support gun control. The don’t believe older Americans, or any Americans, should have a firearm to defend themselves. They can go to hell.

AARP is an organization designed to separate people for their money and to get a kickback doing is by selling overpriced insurance and antique cell phones. We prefer AMAC but I only consider them a lobby group, not for retail benefits.

Now that you know that I am holding back....

Seriously. AARP offers almost nothing that your existing credit cards and or associations like AAA or professional memberships already offer. Read your membership benefits for your credit cards, for example, and you will see discounts on lodging, car rentals and dining purchases just for using the card.

As far as pharmaceutical discounts, I have found that memberships to Sam's club or Costco and CVS or Walgreens subscription plans offer substantial savings even for pet medications.

A product at Walgreens, listed for retail at $160, cost us $30 with their plan (that cost $25 for family enrollment). Also Walmart has significant cuts in some medications although meds covered tend to change month to month.

I have dabbled with 3rd party cards like GoodRX and have found some savings but not across the board saving like with the pharmacy plans.

IMO The bottom line is AARP membership supports a liberal lobby group for the benefit of AARP, not the members.

AARP supported Obamacare. They can rot in hell.

And they love gun control.

A lot of restaurants and hotels have “senior” discounts, with no membership to an organization required.

I would try to not support the AARP.

Does AMAC have anything comparable?

Yes, my wife and I joined AMAC and their Health Insurance is provided by Humana.   I've been satisfied with them but my wife doesn't like them bugging us to join seniors programs like SilverSneakers® or home visitation services and the like.

I've got sense enough to know that every Insurer will try to get people on Medicare to use all of their benefits, which some of us oldsters would feel a nuisance.

I cannot believe that I was the first one to answer the question.   Proof that we FReepers can be obtuse at times.

We got excellent support from AMAC when it came to an advisor when we hit Medicare age.

Wouldn’t join far-left AARP for any reason. We used to send their mail-out garbage back to them in the self-paid envelopes — and added a bunch more paper crap to it just for good measure.

It took about two years but we haven’t been bothered by them in five years.

MOST of the medicare+ plans are all the same

In terms of coverage yes.

In terms of price increases, no. Just look at the price increase history.

I chose the AARP supplemental because they annually recruit the largest group of new (younger) members, helping keep any increases as minimal.

And I did not renew AARP once I was accepted into the insurance - not requested.
