Charles is the new King
BBC ^ | 8 SEPTEMBER 2022 | Staff

At the moment the Queen died, the throne passed immediately and without ceremony to the heir, Charles, the former Prince of Wales.

But there are a number of practical - and traditional - steps which he must go through to be crowned King.

What will he be called?

One of his first acts is to decide whether to reign as King Charles III, or take another name.

For instance, his grandfather George VI's first name was Albert, but he reigned using one of his middle names. Charles could choose from any of his four names - Charles Philip Arthur George.

He is not the only one who faces a change of title.

Although he is heir to the throne, Prince William will not automatically become Prince of Wales. However, he immediately inherits his father's other title, Duke of Cornwall. His wife Catherine will be known as the Duchess of Cornwall.

There will also be a new title for Charles' wife, whose full title will be Queen Consort - consort is the term used for the spouse of the monarch.

Formal ceremonies

In the first 24 hours or so after his mother's death, Charles will be officially proclaimed King. This happens at St James's Palace in London, in front of a ceremonial body known as the Accession Council.

This is made up of members of the Privy Council - a group of senior MPs, past and present, and peers - as well as some senior civil servants, Commonwealth high commissioners, and the Lord Mayor of London.

More than 700 people are entitled in theory to attend, but given the short notice, the actual number is likely to be far fewer. At the last Accession Council in 1952, about 200 attended.

The King does not traditionally attend.

It’s only been done three times. I doubt he’ll choose another name.

“I know he’s mostly Kraut but so are the Anglo-Saxons!”

True, and they did come from a noble house from Saxony, so there is a connection there. But the Angles were quite a bit different, closer to the Nordics than most German tribes. Oddly enough, English is closest to Flemish nowadays, which isn’t much related to either the Saxons or the Angles. I guess it just happened because the Flemish are in close geographic proximity, right across the English channel, so they maintained close contact and trade with the English.

“If he used Arthur (one of his middle names) for his royal cognomen he would be doing a Celt wannabe thing!”

I bet he goes with Arthur too. It would stroke his narcissistic ego, and he loves the Welsh, taking that “Prince of Wales” honorary title very seriously.

She stayed in London. They had previously turned down two offers from the queen and from Charles to overnight at Balmoral a few days ago.

Queen Elizabeth’s coronation was 16 months after becoming Queen. So Charles might have to wait that long or may speed it up.

He’s going to be a woke King.

From 1642, King Charles I fought the armies of the English and Scottish parliaments in the English Civil War. After his defeat in 1645, he surrendered to a Scottish force that eventually handed him over to the English Parliament (the "Long Parliament"). Charles refused to accept his captors' demands for a constitutional monarchy, and temporarily escaped captivity in November 1647. Re-imprisoned on the Isle of Wight, he forged an alliance with Scotland, but by the end of 1648 the Parliamentarian New Model Army had consolidated its control over England. Charles was tried, convicted, and executed for high treason in January 1649. The monarchy was abolished and the Commonwealth of England was established as a republic. The monarchy was restored to Charles's son Charles II in 1660.

Traditionally considered one of the most popular English kings, Charles II is known as the Merry Monarch, a reference to the liveliness and hedonism of his court. He acknowledged at least 12 illegitimate children by various mistresses, but left no legitimate children and was succeeded by his brother, James.

Lets hope that as King Charles III he gives honor back to the name of Charles. If not maybe he should take the name as king Albert or George.

Methinks the U.K.'s monarchy died with Elizabeth.

British citizens who who are paying through the nose for the NHS and energy won't be happy when they see the multi billion pound bill for changing all of the mail boxes, manhole covers, etc from "ER" to "CR" ...

The Queen died from the vaccine that Prince Charles had her take..... Otherwise he would never be king.
