Even the strongholds of the old Republican party, New York, Boston, Chicago, are still liberal strongholds today.
The Liberals have always lived in the Hamptons and Martha's vineyard.
You mean the "northern states?" The "Union" states during the civil war?
There has always been a societal schism between the Liberal northern states who love and want big government and especially the handouts, and the southern Conservative states who have always been wary and suspicious of large government and who have always wanted it to be small.
The differences are simply more pronounced in the states you mentioned, but the mindset runs all through the original Union states during the Civil War.

There were no political parties in the Confederacy. Their elected officials were a mix of Democrats and former Cotton Whigs.
