While not quite as absurd as the water pistol, in at least one New York diocese, a generous application of hand sanitizer by the celebrant has been made part of Mass, before and after Communion.
A jug of the stuff sits prominently on a little table along with the water and wine in the sancturary.

Agreed, it is very odd indeed. Also, I actually did finally figure out that the way I was searching (i.e., using the search box at the top of the home page) was incorrect.
