Pet hamsters belonging to monkeypox patients should be isolated or killed, say health chiefs (from May 2022)

Pet hamsters, gerbils and guinea pigs belonging to monkeypox patients should “ideally be isolated” in government laboratories, according to European health authorities.

In a worst case scenario where monitored isolation and regular testing is unfeasible, the agency suggested a cull should be considered as “a last resort” to prevent the disease gaining a permanent foothold in the region.

So far, 90 cases have been detected across the UK since the virus was first identified in England in early May - including 12 on Thursday - while 344 suspected or confirmed cases have been reported in more than 20 countries worldwide.

In guidance published this week, the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC) urged both those infected with monkeypox and their close contacts to avoid their pets, amid fears the virus could become endemic across the continent if it makes the jump to animals.

omg I never thought of it that way. I hope not.

My original thought was if you have a pet like that it likely does not leave the house. Why kill it ? I get isolating it but likely they live in a cage anyway. Weird thing for them to say.

Unless they know something (!)

Against their wills, these poor pets are forced to explore some rather dark passages. Sometimes it takes a medical crew to extricate them from that crappy place!

I understand hamsters and gerbils. But guinea pigs are pretty big.

“[I]f you have a pet like that it likely does not leave the house. Why kill it ?”

I was thinking that too. But, I suppose some WILL get out, and then they’ll roam about, and if a leap of disease is made in the wild, well I guess I can see how that would be enough.

There was a story about a dog, and Italian Greyhound I believe (they are some classy looking puppies) that contracted it from sleeping in the bed with his gay, non-monogamous, owners. Poor creature. But, to the original point, a pet like a dog WILL leave the house, pretty much every single day, and will interact with other dogs and people. Assume they would have done some quarantine in this case from the news, but who knows? Maybe they took the puppy to a Gay Pride/BLM protest!
