Ford’s $90,000 Lightning Cripples Sales

The Ford Motor Co. plan was to use its installed base of millions of gasoline-powered F-150s as a large pool of potential buyers for its electric F-150 Lightning. The Lightning was competitively priced, which means it had another advantage. Some of the support of Ford’s share price was based on this strategy, as the leading edge of the transformation of the company into an electric vehicle (EV) powerhouse. Sharp increases in the price of the Lightning may undermine those plans.

Ford’s public relations executives like to bury bad news in their press releases. A prime example is the latest one, which yells, “FORD F-150 LIGHTNING STANDARD RANGE INCREASED TO EPA-ESTIMATED 240 MILES; INDUSTRY-FIRST PRO TRAILER HITCH ASSIST NOW AVAILABLE; ORDER BANKS RE-OPEN WITH UPDATED PRICING.” The practice is embarrassing. The important part of the news was that the price of the pickup would rise by thousands of dollars because of component costs.

Buried in the embedded video..."The price increase effectively cancels out the EV tax credit."

Ha, ha, ha. You just can't get ahead. It's like Universities always hiking their prices every time the government makes more education subsidy money available.

All the government has to do is increase the EV tax subsidy, right? It's BOUND to work!

And if the Republicans manage to take over CONgress in November they should do everything they can to help the transition to All electric vehicles by passing a Law mandating ALL Public Employee’s and Officers of the Court Nationwide exclusively use NON ICE Vehicles for All travel with Severe Criminal penalties for non compliance as well as Civil penalties

Any public Employee found to be using an ICE powered vehicle shall be guilty of a Felony, punishable by 10 years in prison and a $10,000,000 fine.

FORCE these asswipes to live under their own rules first.

"3 minutes and you get 500 miles"

That's what I get with my 5.3L V-8. EV seems like about six, eight hours for (maybe) 240 miles.

Such a deal.

From what I’ve heard, the mileage they claim is not even close to real world use.

Its likely closer to 100 miles a charge than it is 200.

Anything sensible would be immediately vetoed by Biden.

"...how many hours does it take for a full charge?"

Ford needs to steal the lead from Tesla and make their own "charging pools," er, "charging dumpsters." They will be a nice place to cool off while you are boiling mad about the time to recharge. Don't forget to toss a swim suit into your tool belt!

Tesla deploys swimming pool at Supercharger station

The King Ranch front seats used to be awesome.

I have no experience about the situation today.

When towing something that range estimate goes way down. The test I saw with a truck bed camper had it drive under 100 miles, but I can’t remember how big the battery pack was. I believe it was the model that claimed 240 mi range.

I own a 1999 F150 with a good 5.4L V8. I also own a 2015 F150 CrewCab with EcoBoost engine. The 2015 just had a failure of the brake master cylinder/brake booster that left my wife with no brakes in the driveway. Brake pedal to the floor. Brake fluid low warning. We were fortunate. It happened in the driveway instead of coming off an 80 MPH freeway offramp. It's a class problem in 2013, 2014, 2015 with EcoBoost engine. The seals fail and all the brake fluid is drawn into the brake booster assembly. Ford recalled 2013,2014 models and fixed them. Thus far, I was left holding the bag with a $922 repair (replaced brake master cylinder/brake booster/brake fluid, bleed brake lines). That said, I have pink slips for both F150s. I'm retiring soon, so there is zero probability that I'll be buying an electric F150.

One of the places I enjoy going in my F150 is Yellowstone National Park. It is 186 miles from my driveway to the parking spot in front of the general store at Old Faithful. I top up my fuel in the Island Park on the way and sometimes on the way back. 10 minutes to fuel the truck and use the restroom. Drinks and snacks if desired. That trip would not be possible with the electric F150. It would be down for a charge just as we arrive in the park and would need another to get home. No sale.

And a King Ranch leather Platinum was really high dollar.

The King Ranch parked next to the double wide. Don't laugh. It's more common than you know.

Add in the destination charge of $1800...plus a paltry $330 of additional options...I came up with right at $99,000.

And then the state of NC gets to add a 3% sales tax...a little less than $3000 additional...puts you at $102,000.

For a truck...to haul overpriced lumber and cinder blocks home from Lowe’s.

And, don’t forget...a recent experiment with a Ford Lightening towing a small RV...maxed out at 83 miles before the battery died.

If the FBI had to drive electric cars and SUVs would they have been able to get to Mar_a_Lago and back?
