How did they survive without being able to change genders?
Emmer wheat, einkorn wheat, and barley were probably harvested before buckwheat groats but buckwheat flour makes great pancakes!
There are (expensive) cold b-fast cereals made with older grains like those, and kamut (my favorite ;), spelt, etc.
