Nichelle Nichols, an actress whose role as the communications chief Uhura in the original “Star Trek” franchise in the 1960s helped break ground on TV by showing a Black woman in a position of authority and who shared with co-star William Shatner one of the first interracial kisses on American prime-time television, died July 30 at 89.

They did a retake of that scene where they didn’t actually kiss so the director could choose which to use in editing. Shatner said he intentionally messed it up so they would have to use the kiss in the episode.

Went to the LA Equestrian Center a few months back to support William Shatner’s charities. He was as spry as ever and was very funny. I watched the original Star Trek in college. Our whole fraternity watched it 5 nights a week.

I think Jack Benny beat Star Trek to multi ethnic cast by 30 years.
Being said, I appreciate Nichols’ whale song over her fan dance. Thanks for the memories.
