Most estimates have relied heavily on information gleaned from Icelandic sagas, but since these were only written down centuries after the fact and talk about things like glittery one-footed assassins, researchers have wisely taken them with a grain of salt.
But the new study, published today in the journal Nature, has pinpointed the Viking presence in North America to an exact year: 1021

BIRTH 1690 • Cherokee, Washington County, Tennessee, Colonial United States of America
DEATH 1730 • Cherokee (Washington County), Washington County, Tenn, Colonial Americaessee, USA
********************************************
Confused. TN became a State 1 June 1796. Never heard of “Colonial United States of America”.
No offense intended Grampa, but the dates don’t jive.

They made it to Minnesota.
They still have ancient relics called the Vikings there.

I don’t think there is evidence showing habitation in the NE as long ago as 40-50k years, and there were a number of migrations. Successive new groups would move in and assimilate, supplant or co-exist with the previous group. There wasn’t just one group in the same way there isn’t such a thing as “Native American culture”. Whole lotta difference peoples.

Maybe.
“In the 1960s, for instance, famed archaeologist Louis Leakey received several National Geographic Society grants to fund excavations at Calico Hills, a site in California that had been rumored to contain stone tools at least a hundred thousand years old.
Unfortunately for Leakey, the site’s particular geology produced stone flakes that looked a lot like tools—making it all but impossible to tell the difference between natural and human-made objects. Modern consensus is that the stone “tools” are naturally occurring.
“Nobody’s gone back and seriously touched that site at all,” says Dillehay. “Leakey was burned, [and] the people associated with the site were burned, so to speak. These things happen.””

My son had his DNA checked by 23 And Me or Ancestry.com (the one that does not identify Neanderthal DNA), and back checked to me and my late husband. Husband’s mother told him she was 1/8th Cree Indian yet our son had no labeled American Indian although my husband’s Scotts ancestry was well identified. In addition my blue eyed, red haired, very mesomorphic, hairy and very strong bodied self strongly suggested 4% or more Neanderthal DNA, which I look forward to being discovered at a site that checks for that. In my case my Prussian German ancestry on my maternal grandmother’s side was clear from the Baltic German traces that my son had, and it was also predicted that I was probably 6 to 9% far, far eastern Eurasian. Since family history said we had robber barron ancestry, and that family was of the Prussian petty nobility, that blood may have come from the “Golden Hoard” of Tatar or Mongol origin. Anyone know who does the best Neanderthal information? I don’t think I have DNA from my husband, but I do have two sons of his and 4 grandsons.

I’ve tried one of those sites, free, but to access the actual breakdown is by fee only, and the Neader/Denisovan report runs $17.

Yeah, very inclusive “evidence.” Some tantalizing hints at this point, no more.

I have read this link and forwarded it to my sons and grandsons. One daughter-in-law is working in genetic counseling and may find it useful as well as interesting. Thanks.
