Afather has garnered support online after admitting to holding his son's college fund "hostage" upon discovering the son no longer wanted to attend.
The 48-year-old man, under the handle of u/Night_Owl63, took to Reddit's "Am I the A**hole" forum where users head to gain insight into their own personal dilemmas. He shared that he started the college fund with his wife as soon as they found out she was pregnant and added that they have so far raised around $400,000.....
However, the son has decided since graduating high school this year that he does not want to attend college. The parents supported the decision, but the son continued to also reject trade schools or offers to work in the family business.
"He said that he planned to use his college fund to start a business of his own. I said that I will allow it only if he takes some business management, accounting and law classes in the nearby community college," wrote the father. "I said that I would pay them out of pocket and not from the fund, and then I would expect a well made business plan before I would give him the money. My wife agrees 100 percent."

Looks to me they ended up with a self-centered entitled spoiled brat. Too much parental understanding (+ public education) and not enough discipline.
It sounds like he’s establishing more onerous conditions for the kid to start a business than he would have imposed on his college selection and admission process.
As for this father, sounds proper to me, especially if the mom agrees.
“Starting a business” sounds like “blowing the money on stuff I want”.
Like Paul McCartney once said, “Give your children enough to do something, but not enough to do nothing.”
Good for dad!
my oldest squeaked by in high school and wanted me to pay for her to attend a small college.
I said no.
why would i pay when you did not do your work when it was free?
She joined the Navy. it all worked out.
Like I told my kids. Just because I put money away for them to go to college doesn’t mean it is their money to do as they please with.
If the son literally did call his parents “A-Holes” for setting condoms about that money, that son is extremely disrespectful. The dad may have only meant there was vigorous disagreement from the son. Each family has it’s own rules about what acceptable behavior means.
**condoms = conditions!
Exactly. A college fund is for ... college. It’s not a slush fund for fun and games. It easily could turn into the parents’ vacation fund.
The money belongs to the parents. I have such a fund for both of my children. If they attend college it will be STEM only.
In the event they choose a different path, they will get the money, when they inherit it.
Student loans are for fun and parties.
Parents money, their rules. The business idea does show he has some gumption depending on what business he plans to open. He seems aware college is not the end all for everyone. I applauded that. The dad’s idea of business training first is great plan for him. Kid could be self starter type and needs direction. Parents usually know what is best. So tell him get over notion the money is his, it is not an inheritance.
I would review IRS rules on using education funds for non education purposes. Not been down that road personally BUT something tells me deferred money has implications.
I know of a very well to do family that had six kids. As each kid turned 18 they would have a big dinner with all the birthday kid’s favorite foods. When the dinner was over the mother would quickly wash the plate and hand it to her husband. Pop would break the plate and quietly tell the kid, “this was your last free meal under my roof, what are your plans.”
It seems that was a family tradition going back 4 or 5 generations. Afaik the tradition carries on.
LOL!
You got autocowrecked!
“If the son literally did call his parents ‘A-Holes’ for setting condoms about that money, that son is extremely disrespectful.”
If he did that, it’s his parents’ fault; they didn’t raise him right.
I like it!
I never heard that! Brilliantly witty!
“autocowrecked”!
Kind of explains why that family has always been a local power.
