RICHMOND, Va. -- Anti-abortion supporters rallied at the Virginia State Capitol Saturday afternoon to call on state lawmakers to limit access to abortion in the Commonwealth.
More than 100 people turned out for the rally organized by Virginia's 5th District Congressman Bob Good in a push for a complete ban on abortions in Virginia.
Additionally, Good and supporters criticized Republicans looking to compromise on the issue as it is now up to states to decide after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
While many states had so-called trigger laws or pre-Roe laws on the books that have begun to restrict access or are working their way through the courts, access in Virginia has not changed.
When Democrats had full control on lawmaking abilities, they expanded access in 2020. Abortion remains legal in Virginia through the second trimester, and in some cases in the third.
However, Republicans now control two of the three levers of power: the House and Governor's mansion. Gov. Glenn Youngkin has tasked four Republican lawmakers with coming up with legislation that could get bipartisan consensus, since the Senate is in Democrat hands with a 21 to 19 majority.
Youngkin's spokesperson has said the governor told them to prioritize when a fetus begins to feel pain, including a 15-week threshold. But Youngkin acknowledged that 20-weeks might be needed for a compromise.

Abortion should be banned from conception forward.
Republican politicians used Roe vs. Wade as an excuse to sell out for decades.
That excuse is gone.
Every innocent little preborn baby, from conception forward, deserves to be protected.
Roe is dead.
It is time for babies to live.
Any Republican who goes against that is unfit to hold office.
They can’t sell out anymore. They either deliver or we abort them out.
“But Youngkin acknowledged that 20-weeks might be needed for a compromise.”
...Youngkin is doing exactly what I figured. Crossing the f’n aisle. Extending an olive branch and the all the other pussy sayings.
AMEN. We'll see who goes squishy.
Mind blowing really...
I don’t get it, I personally stayed out of sex in high school and college. That was my choice personally, but glad none of my children as the father were aborted.
Ditto!!!
“Did you ever think you’d see so many people who hate babies and want them dead at any cost?”
Not any more. I’m so used to it that I’m not even phased.
They’re afraid of 2 things.
Not getting reelected and riots.
And many of them will not be holding office if they try to force a total ban.
Negotiating with bad policy is like adding sewage to your drinking water.
Start off by banning all abortions with the clear exception if the Mother's life is in danger. If it fails in the D Senate, then it fails. But at least you negotiated from a position of strength and forced the Dems to embrace their unpopular position.
I think we will see Europe style restrictions at some point with a 12-15 week max for abortions at the federal level with some medical exceptions.
This will not make either side happy but will be the compromise ‘most’ people, other than the aborted, can live with.
On the good side it would stop late term abortions. On the bad side it would not sit well with those believing/knowing a life started at conception.
If this compromise were established I think the 12 week (first trimester) limit would serve everyone best; including the science about when the nervous system develops. It would give the woman time to know, time to decide, and time to abort as early as she could.
I know this won’t sit well with a lot of good people here and I apologize for that. I’m simply being a realist about how (I think) this will eventually shake out.
Virginia is a purple/blue state. Youngkin only won because the Democrats pissed of enough liberal moms in NOVA over school issues and Youngkin earned their votes.
Virginia is not going to get a total ban on abortion and people here are delusional if they think different.
Politics is about winning and total abortion bans are not winning issues other than in a small handful of crimson-red states. A majority of Americans support abortion in the first trimester. This has been unchanged since the earliest days of Roe.
Virginia is at best a purple state. Pushing a total ban means the rats will get full control and eventually unlimited abortions. Be smart, save the ones we can.
AFAIC, the USSC has now corrected a grievous ruling 50 years prior and affirmed that abortion is not a Constitutionally protected federal right but a question that should be left to the individual states.
What Virginia does in the aftermath is of no consequence to me.
I should add that I hope a provision is included that allows for states to make their own limit less than a 12 week federal limit but not more.
This would protect the unborn as much as possible in this political climate with this issue and also give people some control over what happens in their particular state.

Sadly, as Virginian, I have to agree. Especially up here in the lib cesspool that is Northern Virginia. You go all extreme and they will paint us as such.
Best to play their game ....push forward with small change, and let their frogs boil slowly for a change eventually. Let it sink into these sleezy women that abortion is something that is not always something they can snap their fingers and get at any time. Give the tide time to change ... I hate abortion as much as anyone, but I’m a realist and know my neighbors and people in my area well enough.
The Congressman has had their chance. It’s up the states now. And the reps within the state are beholden to their constituents—who have much more impact than they do in Congress.
Congress had, literally, 50 years to legislate this issue. All they did was use it as a fundraiser on both sides.
If this critter has an opinion, he should call his state rep (or house member). Otherwise, his right to bitch is forfeit.
