‘Did I care? No, because I was making $11.50’: Former Walmart door greeter says he would ignore customers who stole baby formula, Pampers (updated)

In a viral TikTok video, a former Walmart door greeter says he would not stop customers who stole expensive childcare items, like baby formula or Pampers.

Brandon Tamayo (user @brandontamayo02) stitched a video from user @commlion, including the audio, “If you see anyone stealing, no you didn’t.” He then goes on to share his experience working as a door greeter at Walmart, someone who greets customers as they enter and exit, and checks receipts as they leave.

“Every time I saw a customer, mostly a woman, and I checked the receipt, and I saw Pampers or baby formula that was not on the receipt, I just said, ‘Have a great day,’” Tamayo says.

He explains that he never stopped these customers because childcare products can often be difficult for people to afford. Walmart also did not offer any rewards to employees who stopped customers from stealing.

“Why? Because they’re expensive and kids are expensive, in general,” he says. “And my store, and the company in general, we didn’t really get a reward for the amount of stuff we caught people stealing.”

“Did I care? No, because I was making $11.50 at that time,” he says.

His video received over 1.4 million views and sparked debate about stealing in the comments.

Many users praised Tamayo for avoiding customers who stole baby products.

“Not all heroes wear capes,” one user said.

“We need to nominate you for the Nobel peace prize lol,” another said.

Some users echoed Tamayo’s sentiment that employees are not paid enough to deal with people who steal items.

“Walmart employees don’t get paid enough to fight with people who are stealing,” one user said.

“When I work for Walmart I didn’t care about it because I didn’t get enough money for that,” another said.

I think we’ve seen stories where store employees actually got into trouble by trying to ‘do something’.

yes, in alot of places you do get in trouble for stopping a crime.
I would have a hard time with that- if i see someone breaking the law in my store, i’m gonna say something ( as an employee)

With that being said, what is an elderly Walmart greeter going to do? Tackle the shop lifter and pin them to the floor until the cops arrive?

I don't blame it on store policy, I blame it on the legal system and its lawyers willing to jump in and sue the company for whatever alleged racist event may have taken place..........

The prostituting law industry has all these companies scared shitless.........

I worked as a security guard at WM for 6 months. Greeters and other employees are instructed to not obstruct shoplifters as all. Another SG who actually stopped a large man pushing out a cart with three TVs in it and other electronic goodies was fired for that act.

Greeters tend to be old folks who are not up to labor work or rapid motion or they are regular employees who do turns on the door. I know a pharmacy tech who does her turns at greetery.

walmart door greeters are not cops, and there’s basically not a damn thing they can do about theft except notify a security guard, IF the store has one ...

they don’t even have the authority to MAKE you show a receipt ... i routinely ignore any such requests at walmart because i’m not a thief and don’t feel compelled to prove it ...

Lol! The word ‘former’ is staring me in the face.
If it were a Pit Bull, it would have bit me.
“Guilty!”

I was riding that flying carpet of ‘outrage’, and would not be distracted!

A lot of people have a hard time affording what they need to buy. They can go to a food bank and stop stealing items.

They are not victims. They are thieves.

Theft at Walmart costs EVERYONE because the losses must be made up by those who DO pay for their merchandise.

Women can wash and reuse soiled cloth diapers. Throwaway diapers only became available in my lifetime. They can also breast feed their babies as women have done for THOUSANDS OF YEARS.

Walmart employee and a customer were shot by a shoplifter as they tried to stop him from leaving the store, leaving the shopper dead and the worker seriously injured Cincinnati

“Legal title to my property transferred to me as soon as I traded cash for goods at the register.”

What did you do with the title to your truck; or the deed to your property? Burn them or keep them around?

“But Walmart could use to lost a few hundred billion dollars.”

Because they can just pass along that cost of doing business to honest customers; no one gets hurt.

It will only aid in Walmart going broke, which is fine with me. The last time I went to Walmart was early in the pandemic. Governor Wolf had just released his essential businesses list. Non essential businesses, particularly small businesses, had to shutter and many went belly up. When I last arrived at Walmart the parking lot had portable stadium lighting to brightly light the parking lot beyond the normal lights. There was a loud speaker blaring instructions. The entrance was cordoned to limit the number of people entering the store. Masks and social distancing was strictly enforced. Walmart had social distancing sticker on the floor and the aisles were setup to be one-way. It was dystopian. All of that to by crap from China.

No thank you, I will never go to Walmart again.

I am serious about my boycotts. Decades ago, Kmart made a big fuss over guns and stopped selling them. I haven’t been back and I am pretty sure they went out of business. Dicks Sporting goods made me show ID to buy ammo, which is not required in PA. I haven’t been back. Buffalo Wild Wings has a sign to stop people from concealed carry. I didn’t even go in, and never will - even if they change their policies.

“Because they can just pass along that cost of doing business to honest customers; no one gets hurt.”

That is the singular statement that costs Republicans about 30 million votes every election because of its complete disconnect to reality. You’re citing an economic theory which presumes a functionally infinite number of producers at zero retail mark-up, resulting in a profit margin no larger than the economic growth rate. Walmart is not a producer, they have an enormous mark-up, and makes an obscene profit. Walmart cannot pass both pass costs to the consumer and maintain their market share. For God’s sake, if you’re going to base your political philosophy on a single sentence from an economics 101 textbook, read the qualifiers, not just the punchline.
