In a viral TikTok video, a former Walmart door greeter says he would not stop customers who stole expensive childcare items, like baby formula or Pampers.
Brandon Tamayo (user @brandontamayo02) stitched a video from user @commlion, including the audio, “If you see anyone stealing, no you didn’t.” He then goes on to share his experience working as a door greeter at Walmart, someone who greets customers as they enter and exit, and checks receipts as they leave.
“Every time I saw a customer, mostly a woman, and I checked the receipt, and I saw Pampers or baby formula that was not on the receipt, I just said, ‘Have a great day,’” Tamayo says.
He explains that he never stopped these customers because childcare products can often be difficult for people to afford. Walmart also did not offer any rewards to employees who stopped customers from stealing.
“Why? Because they’re expensive and kids are expensive, in general,” he says. “And my store, and the company in general, we didn’t really get a reward for the amount of stuff we caught people stealing.”
“Did I care? No, because I was making $11.50 at that time,” he says.
His video received over 1.4 million views and sparked debate about stealing in the comments.
Many users praised Tamayo for avoiding customers who stole baby products.
“Not all heroes wear capes,” one user said.
“We need to nominate you for the Nobel peace prize lol,” another said.
Some users echoed Tamayo’s sentiment that employees are not paid enough to deal with people who steal items.
“Walmart employees don’t get paid enough to fight with people who are stealing,” one user said.
“When I work for Walmart I didn’t care about it because I didn’t get enough money for that,” another said.

Majority of these stolen products are re-sold.
With a tough demanding job like “greeter” he certainly deserved at least $12 an hour, don’t you think Pedro? No wonder he was disgruntled.
Don’t ask who Pedro is. Had a thought about a hypothetical landscaper making minimum wage while killing himself outside every day, changed my mind, and somehow Pedro remained in the comment.
Minimum wage. Minimum skills. Minimum integrity. Minimum worthiness.
Diapers ...baby food...large screen TVs.
I refuse to let them check my receipt. Legal title to my property transferred to me as soon as I traded cash for goods at the register. Forcing me to prove ownership of my property at the door goes against many constitutional rights including the right against self incrimination and the right to be secure in my papers and property.
Yea, my wife doesn’t like it either but too bad. Caving in to the small stuff is what got us where we are as a country.
A lot of the theft would decrease if Walmart didn’t have customers scan their own items.
If management is paying attention, they should know about this guy posting his videos for attention.
They should know he does not care about theft in any way, and has decided to justify it.
If he thinks so little of his job, why doesn’t he just quit?
Maybe he likes that $11.50 per hour.
Maybe he’s acting as a ‘fence’ for some of that loot.
His next job may be harder to get, now that he has a ‘footprint’ on YouTube.
I’ve never figured out what they’re actually looking for on the receipt. A code, an item over a certain dollar amount?
They do this at Costco, but they do it so fast and our cart is always so full of stuff, I don’t see how they can tell anything.
Every store is its own profit center. Products cost less at Walmarts located in upscale white areas. Did a bit of comparative shopping with my girls when they went to college, as a lesson. Savings can be substantial. There is a reason white areas have better products that cost less, and it has nothing to do with racism, just the bottom line.
And yet, none of the financial wizards at the Fed or in the White House seem to think paying a greeter $11.50 has anything to do with inflation.
We’re watching a not so slow motion train wreck.
the good part is as employers, we can scour social media (which is one of first steps prior to hiring) and this idiot just outed himself.
Correct, but I’m sure they are working on a RoboCop fix for that.
He ought to ask himself why he accepted the job with the hourly wage he earned. It’s obvious 11.50 is all he’s worth.
They're looking to make sure it's an actual Walmart receipt and that the customer didn't walk in with a piece of paper, pick up some items and walk out.
They often check the date, time, and store. Just like scenario above, they want to make sure someone didn't shop on one day at one store, come back a few days later at another store, pick up some items, and walk out.
They usually mark the receipt with a highlighter or marker to prevent someone from using the receipt again.
Well, I guess that makes sense then. And they do mark it at my Costco.
let the manager deal with thieves. they have cameras and mirrors to detect that when it goes on.
With Hillary, Joe, and the FBI all getting passes, this mentality will grow.
>> With a tough demanding job like “greeter” <<
Well, that’s just it, isn’t it? They called him a “greeter” but apparently they wanted him to be an unarmed security agent or “shrinkage prevention” agent.
You try to live on $11.50. I’m not condoning what he did; he shouldn’t take the job for that pay. But Walmart could use to lost a few hundred billion dollars.
