A Mustard Shortage Could Be Hitting the U.S. Soon — Here’s What You Need to Know

Apparently the world’s supply of a favorite hot dog condiment doesn’t cut the … err … mustard. And, as a result, we may be looking at an international mustard shortage sooner than we think.

According to Business Insider, a year of poor mustard seed production is the cause of what may result in a lack of mustard on American grocery store shelves in the near future. Experts say you can thank climate change for the large drop in mustard seed production, with Canada (the world’s second largest producer) and France watching the most recent growing season’s yields fall 28 percent and 50 percent, respectively, because of drought and bad weather. As Russia and Ukraine are also large producers of mustard seeds, the ongoing war isn’t helping the importing efforts either.

Before you start practicing eating your favorite summer meals with just ketchup and relish, however, don’t worry. More than likely, U.S. grocery shelves will still have plenty of the condiment to go around. But how much do you like your spicy yellow add-on? If it’s enough to pay more for it, you may want to prepare yourself as price jumps are being felt around the world.

This news comes on the heels of Huy Fong Foods Inc. bracing its customers this past April that it’s suspending production of cult favorite hot sauce Sriracha (the condiment we put on everything) due to a “severe shortage of chili” from the droughts in Mexico — where they’re grown.

I use mustard in my 1000 island dressing. I also make my own mayonnaise using mustard with a immersion blender:

Mayonnaise Best Recipe:

2 eggs
2 cups saffola oil
2 TBS lemon juice
2 TBS white vinegar
1 tsp sugar
1/2 TBS Kosher salt
1 TBS Dijon mustard
½ tsp paprika
½ tsp garlic powder
Small pinch of cayenne pepper
Black pepper to coat surface of oil

Put all ingredients into a wide mouth quart jar.

Use an immersion blender on high, starting from the bottom of the jar and slowly work the blender in circular motions up to the top. The result will be a custardy emulsion.

A few months ago I started making my own mustard. It was surprisingly good and not hard to make.

I love burgers... on multigrain toast with yellow mustard and dill pickle.

I like fries with mayo

Tots with Catsup

Steak with salt and pepper.

I sometimes fry an egg with a teaspoon of pesto... phenomenal.

I’m stocking up on yellow mustard today.

soft pretzels.

Even hard pretzels benefit from a drag through some mustard.

I like Bornier Dijon...pricey from Amazon but my local store carries it.

I apologize profusely for what I’m about to write. I don’t care what anybody says Dijon mustard tastes bad.

And I like mustard, I like horseradish, and I like white wine but there’s something in dijon and mustard that just tastes difficult for me to understand why it is so widely touted.

I’m not a big fan of “Deli” style mustard either.

Peter Navarro was saying a few months ago that this is how “they” manipulate goods to spur fear and resultant inflation.

Of course! It used to be in Mount Horeb, but moved to Middleton for better traffic flow. Worked out GREAT because now we have a Duluth Trading Company in their old spot!

It’s interesting - lots of free samples. They got me hooked on mustard and pretzels, which is what they use for their samples. I can’t even begin to tell you how many mustard varieties they carry. Thousands? Lots of funny/historical displays, too.
