The US welfare state is being used to subsidizes the workforces of large corporations like Walmart and increases corporate profits. I think this is some that the left and right may be able to find some agreement in.

The market should set salaries, period.

I have a problem with the idea every job should pay a career wage. Communism by the backdoor.

If they give you full time hours, then they have to provide you with benefits like health insurance, so they may only give you 20-30 hours per week.

That’s the mindset of wokies, no compromise, no debate or discussion just yell loud and often and call anyone who disagrees or doesn’t submit names.

It’s obnoxious

Yup, no one would work those jobs if it wasn’t for taxpayer subsidies.

Corporate socialism is in my opinion the worst kind of socialism. You can’t even argue that it benefits the less fortunate when the people benefiting the most are the Waltons and their shareholders.

If you are an adult working minimum wage, you are eligible for several means-tested benefits -----"

And don't forget other income redistribution features of the tax code like EIC and Child Tax Credits.

Throw in state and local government subsidies for plant/infrastructure and you get the new American business model of "privatize the profits and socialize the costs."

We may hate Corporate Welfare, but it is how the game of business is played in this age of globalization. The self employed and small entrepreneur be damned of course.

IMO, the wages aren’t there because the demand and supply for the job just doesn’t warrant $25-$30 and hour, period.

That the government chose to set the standards for SNAP, EITC, AFDC, Section 8, WICs, et al so low is not the first-fault of employers. All raising the wages for unskilled workers will do is to put the cost off on the consumer/taxpayer and the government will have even more money to buy idiots’ votes.

Further, that the government now ADMITS that after-HS education in this country is largely worthless by signaling they will ‘forgive’ student loans is just more proof that THIS government does not want educated citizenry; it wants dumbed-down voters and it will supply all the largess they need (on taxpayers’ dollars) to effect that.

Please give us some details as to how Walmart workers cost taxpayers 9 billion dollars a year. I read this thread and people’s comments, and I don’t know what this thread is discussing. Please explain how this apparent subsidy is costing us 9 billion a year.

“The market should set salaries, period.”

On that, we completely agree.

If the government would stop mass immigration and h1-b visa salaries would go much, much higher.

“I don’t know why Walmart is brought up. Their starting pay is $15/hr.”

That is the minimum wage for many locations in NY, and only slightly more than the minimum wage in CT, MA, and NJ.

Silly rant. As if Walmart is the only corporation doing this. So are all the Dollar type chains and fast food chains.

Further more, most of their employees don’t want to work full time or at all. They choose this lifestyle because the dem controlled FedGov makes it possible with the income levels they set for benefits.

And many of these employees are genuinely disabled and really can’t physically handle a 40 hour work week.

But sure, blame corporate America for the welfare state.

Companies should be paying their own workforces not pocketing profits that only exist from the fact their employees are being supported by the taxpayers.

To get a job at Walmart, you have to speak English. To get a job on a farm, you have to speak Spanish. Farmers could automate with robots, but government free market interference prevents it. Go after farming and food production first. Keep in mind, for every $1 spent on welfare, another $1 goes into the pockets of a Democrat government employee to administer those benefits. They are not going to give up their easy ride without a very ugly fight.

Not specifically him, but Walmart workers collect 8 billion dollars in taxpayer dollars a year on top of their wages.

That is ridiculous, what is the motivation for corporations to provide living wages to attract talent or employees to search for better jobs/improve themselves when taxpayers are subsidizing their wages.

If you are a corporation paying more to their workforce you don’t get the benefits you should in a free market because the benefits of your higher wages are offset by lose of welfare.

If you are an employee you have no motivation to improve yourself because there is no monetary benefit.

It is literally the worst of both worlds

I’m with a fair tax at this stage of our country. When I started working at 16, in 1976 minimum wage was $2.30. Michigan now is $9.87. In 2011, it was $7.40.

So in 46 years, minimum wage went from 2.30 t0 9.87. $7.57 increase.

Yes, make the minimum wage $25, and eliminate welfare programs. Make companies with more than 1000 national employees pay for medical benefits, vacation, etc. Companies like Walmart etc. can easily afford these costs.

Top heavy companies that value white collar over “workers” has become prevalent. I’m blue collar and have watched white collar wages triple while mine went up 30% and I’ve never worked for a company with more than 20 employees. It’s not just walmart. Every stupid little company now has an HR dept or at least HR person who’s job it is to save every nickel and dime by managing the workers.
