No one would work minimum wage jobs if they were not subsidized by government. The profits of Walmart and other corporations come largely from the fact there workforce is subsidized by the welfare state. Companies should be paying their own workforces not pocketing profits that only exist from the fact their employees are being supported by the taxpayers.
Who actually benefits from this? This is something I think the left and right should agree on. The left hates billionaire corporations and the right hates the welfare state and wasteful spending. Subsidizing Walmart workers costs the US taxpayers about 8 billion dollars a year, while the Walmart profit is 13 billion.
I’m not sure the exact solution but it is ridiculous that taxpayers are subsidizing the workforce of a large corporation while the government is running massive deficits and there are homeless disabled vets on the streets. Those jobs and workers only can exist due to government subsidies.
This is corporate socialism in action.
You underestimate the hate the left has for us.
Walmart pays almost twice the federal minimum wage.
I think over the years the layoffs in auto plants and other big unionized plants that take advantage of unemployment insurance annually are a big cost to consumers and tax payers. For 60 years this has been a regular cycle.
The employer pays for some of the cost for state unemployment insurance but the taxpayer does as well.
My point is that it is not just low end retail by big business that is subsidized in this manner.
Are you talking about people that are ON welfare, but also work for Walmart?
Where is that happening? There is ONE wheelchair bound guy that works at my Walmart. Is he somehow subsidized by me to work there?
If so, I’m all for it. Hire all the Vets and Disabled you want, Walmart.
There are very few things I DON’T b*tch about when it comes to Mother Government. This, along with police, fire, EMS, Libraries and decent roads is one of the few things that don’t bother me.
Maybe I need more examples of how workers at Walmart are ‘subsidized’ at Walmart for me to get upset about this.
P.S. Yes. I can READ a package label. I only buy American Made stuff when I purchase things, with the exception of Avocados from Mexico and Vodka from Poland. ;)
I don’t know why Walmart is brought up. Their starting pay is $15/hr.
True, but when working people in Auto Factories earn a high enough wage to live a modest lifestyle on and get good benefits and a pension.
The average full time Walmart Worker is on the other end of the spectrum.
It could be because one is unionized and the other is not, who knows.
The other thing Walmart does is import a huge amount of cheap stuff from China.
I shop at Walmart for a few things and they do provide a service to a lot of people, but there is a downsize of a Walmart coming to town.
The woke big corporations declared war on us.
Most of the plebes don’t even know it yet.

“Walmart pays almost twice the federal minimum wage.”
Don’t stop him. He’s on a roll. My brother worked there for a while as a shelf stocker. The average Walmart pay for what he did is $14.00 an hour. They also paid his college tuition. So this evil company pays twice the minimum wage and will pay for you to better yourself. Terrible. The government needs to come in and run Walmart. Maybe they can determine a fair profit for the company and set the pay scale so that it’s more equitable.
Yes, they hate us and there not one reason to work with them on anything. The whole premise of this piece is nuts.
Hubris zapped more than one Freeper newbie.
Most of them thought they had something important to say.
The federal minimum wage is a joke.
You try living on 7-8 bucks an hour for a year and then get back to us.
Walmart is a big enemy of the left, is why they’re being brought up. They attack the same large companies over and over and over. Walmart, Coke, McDonald’s…
I don’t believe a f****ng thing they say, ever.
The U.S. welfare state is subsidizing tens of millions of able bodied people to stay out of the labor force.
But almost all their non management workers work short shifts and are enrolled in the usual government “gimme dat” programs.
They and other “gateway job” employers are heavily subsidized by the taxpayers.......since our population pyramid has become a column...and these jobs are career cappers for the economically displaced.

Where WallyWorld shines is in knowing exactly how many employees at what hourly rates are needed to keep each store in operation. While Food Lion pioneered the concept WallyWorld has perfected it.
That and their shenanigans forcing companies to offshore production to get lower prices.
Fact: Walmart has done more to fight poverty than any government program.
My idea: Everyone works 40 hours a week-provable-before getting one cent of government assistance. Switch to a fair tax where everyone pays the same rate. Then once a year congress votes to declare what the minimum income should be for that one year. We are subsidizing tattoos indirectly under the current system.
The other thing is that many Walmart customers are on public assistance (and not just Walmart, obviously). So a lot of their revenue indirectly comes from the Gubermint.
