This is something I think the left and right should agree on.

You underestimate the hate the left has for us.

Walmart pays almost twice the federal minimum wage.

I think over the years the layoffs in auto plants and other big unionized plants that take advantage of unemployment insurance annually are a big cost to consumers and tax payers. For 60 years this has been a regular cycle.

The employer pays for some of the cost for state unemployment insurance but the taxpayer does as well.

My point is that it is not just low end retail by big business that is subsidized in this manner.

Are you talking about people that are ON welfare, but also work for Walmart?

Where is that happening? There is ONE wheelchair bound guy that works at my Walmart. Is he somehow subsidized by me to work there?

If so, I’m all for it. Hire all the Vets and Disabled you want, Walmart.

There are very few things I DON’T b*tch about when it comes to Mother Government. This, along with police, fire, EMS, Libraries and decent roads is one of the few things that don’t bother me.

Maybe I need more examples of how workers at Walmart are ‘subsidized’ at Walmart for me to get upset about this.

P.S. Yes. I can READ a package label. I only buy American Made stuff when I purchase things, with the exception of Avocados from Mexico and Vodka from Poland. ;)

I don’t know why Walmart is brought up. Their starting pay is $15/hr.

The woke big corporations declared war on us.

Most of the plebes don’t even know it yet.

The U.S. welfare state is subsidizing tens of millions of able bodied people to stay out of the labor force.

The other thing is that many Walmart customers are on public assistance (and not just Walmart, obviously). So a lot of their revenue indirectly comes from the Gubermint.

I like your libertarian sentiments, but, you are seeking common agreement and ideological purity, while the left will respond with a political power play

Something like - “Yes, government welfare is subsidizing these firms, which means we need to unionize all Walmart and Amazon employees, increase the national minimum wage to $25/hour, and raise taxes on these companies.”

Do you have any verifiable data to back that up?

I know Walmart STARTING pay is $16.40/hr
Plus health ins plus in store discounts plus help to go to college
PLUS that is starting pay. If you show up work hard you get raises and promotions
Most big box retailers are the same

I’ve been saying this for years.

Verizon loves the Obamaphone
Walmart loves the EBT card.
Landlords love the Section 8 housing (as do the construction, legal, appliances, etc. industries that go into the building & maintenance thereof)

It’s a guaranteed government paycheck for them

What’s unique about walmart here? Plenty of folks on the dole in one form or another.

Government should be entirely out of the charity business.

This has been going on for years. Forty years ago, my neighbor paid her greenhouse employees just right up to the line where they could still collect welfare.

IMO, the wages aren’t there because the demand and supply for the job just doesn’t warrant $25-$30 and hour, period.

That the government chose to set the standards for SNAP, EITC, AFDC, Section 8, WICs, et al so low is not the first-fault of employers. All raising the wages for unskilled workers will do is to put the cost off on the consumer/taxpayer and the government will have even more money to buy idiots’ votes.

Further, that the government now ADMITS that after-HS education in this country is largely worthless by signaling they will ‘forgive’ student loans is just more proof that THIS government does not want educated citizenry; it wants dumbed-down voters and it will supply all the largess they need (on taxpayers’ dollars) to effect that.

Silly rant. As if Walmart is the only corporation doing this. So are all the Dollar type chains and fast food chains.

Further more, most of their employees don’t want to work full time or at all. They choose this lifestyle because the dem controlled FedGov makes it possible with the income levels they set for benefits.

And many of these employees are genuinely disabled and really can’t physically handle a 40 hour work week.

But sure, blame corporate America for the welfare state.

Companies should be paying their own workforces not pocketing profits that only exist from the fact their employees are being supported by the taxpayers.

To get a job at Walmart, you have to speak English. To get a job on a farm, you have to speak Spanish. Farmers could automate with robots, but government free market interference prevents it. Go after farming and food production first. Keep in mind, for every $1 spent on welfare, another $1 goes into the pockets of a Democrat government employee to administer those benefits. They are not going to give up their easy ride without a very ugly fight.
