Flew as a flight of 6 F-4Ds.

Might that have been in 1973? If so, I was there waiting for you. I worked aircraft instrumentation at Lakenheath 1973-1976.

Don't suppose you remember the tail number?

Did you stay at Lakenheath? If so, I probably met you at maintenance debriefing a few times.

What was the weirdest instrument problem you ever had on F-4Ds?

Thanks for sharing.

Yes it is Navy.

Used for adversary training.

Oh, not all USAF fighters have tail hooks. A-10 for one. No hook.

IMHO the A-10 is not a fighter. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

It was 1976, so perhaps we have met. We only spent a couple of days at Lakenheath.

My weirdest instrument problem (self induced) is airspeed failure...went to 0. Of course, I reached down and put the pitot heat on and the airspeed started reading correctly.

Other than that, I can't think of any instrument problems. If I do, I will PM you. Regards

Dare you to say that to a Hog Drivers face. Better yet, at a Hog bar, stand up and tell that to all the Hog Drivers.

USAF rates the A-10 as a no-kidding fighter: has A/A missiles, gun is used for A/G and A/A. Flies CAS and Strike and A/A missions. A true multi-role fighter.

Got to say, when the highlight of your mission is the landing, you are the weak sister of the fighter world. . .oh, that’s right, that’s the Navy. . .

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

😘

*That doesn’t sound right about the kamikaze planes. Why would the Japanese bother to modify the landing gear, and how could the pilots not know what was going on?*

It’s the Japanese mind-think. A superior officer tells you to jump you don’t ask how high. You just jump. You don’t ask what’s going on. Taking off the landing gear was the message they weren’t coming back. The west will never understand and there will always be wars.

Could you provide a reference for this information about removing the kamikaze planes’ landing gear? I read a memoir by a kamikaze pilot many years ago, and I don’t remember anything about that. The pilots didn’t need any hints like their landing gear falling off; they knew quite well what was expected.

Sorry I can’t do that. I heard it second-hand. No reason to not believe it. As for the individual(s) who chickened out of their one and only final mission talking about it afterwards was not an option. My ‘source’ heard about it 15 years after the war ended.

My studies on the subject would suggest the carrier pilots captains ‘asked’ for volunteers. Many balked and were berated. Ultimately they ‘volunteered’. Another island-based pilot made 4 attempts. One was aborted when he was intercepted and had to drop his bomb into the ocean to escape being shot down. His 4th attempt was aborted as the war ended. He knew all along what his mission was.

Some gung-ho higher-ups boasted how they would return to continue fighting and win the war despite the overwhelming evidence it was lost. The young pilots were not entitled to their own observations. I eventually read a book written by some Minnesota Phd.(Japanese born). She wrote about their poetry writings-waste of time. It’s out there. No coming to grips or understanding. These pilots were not country-bumpkins. They all went to the elite universities. They were the future ‘leaders’ of Japan and were expected to show how it’s done.

I only wish that Eastwood or Mel Gibson would make a movie on them.

I was hoping you had another source available. My only real information came from that book, which I read at least 50 years ago. Can’t recall even the title, so I can’t swear that there was no mention of landing-gear modifications. As I remember, the war ended before the pilot had to do the crashy thing.

No Navy F-16s.

The Navy does use F-16s as aggressor aircraft.

I think the Navy had some F-16N aircraft some years ago that served as “enemy” A/C for their Top Gun training but not sure if they still have them.

Yes, NFWS and VF-126 had F-16N from 1987 to 1993ish at Miramar. The N model was a block 30 C model with APG66 radar and no gun.

Since then, the Navy has used some refurbished F16A & C's at Fallon.
