View comments A mother has told of her mid-air terror after her teenage daughter blacked out and suffered an allergic reaction at 30,000 feet on a British Airways when a passenger opened a packet of peanuts on board.
Joanna Jones, 39, was flying to London from Antigua when her 14-year-old daughter Poppy needed oxygen and two EpiPen shots during the nightmare eight-hour flight after suffering a severe reaction to the nuts.
As Poppy's condition worsened, a quick-thinking nurse on board dashed to help - while the captain considered making an emergency landing.
Eventually the pilot landed the plane safely at Gatwick and Poppy was rushed to hospital.
Speaking exclusively to MailOnline, Joanna said: ’It was a nightmare for all of us and I really thought she might die.

You are kidding, right?
Nuts are all around, some come from shells and husks, other in human flesh.
No, one cannot be charged with eating nuts as a form of attempted murder or any other crime and certainly not under these conditions.
If this child has such a powerful allergy to peanuts etc, then the mother was the one with responsibility. If the crew offered nuts, then that’s another thing. They could refrain if they so choose. As for the guy, if he had brought nuts aboard on his own, not much anyone could do unless there is a specific prohibition against eating anything not offered by the flight...
True, the guy was an unkind and thoughtless oaf, but there is and can be no law against that.... Mom could sue the dude in civil court, I suppose.
the guys is an asshole but not a criminal.
Oh, I believe peanut allergies exist. I believe people can die from them.
I also believe that anyone so sensitive to peanuts that the mere odor will kill them needs to stay the hell off of airplanes and stay away from the public.
I suspect the girl was in no actual danger, but hysterical-mom had to make a show of how important it was to keep her daughter away from peanuts, so of course the daughter is going to go along with the show.
Anyone can act like they are having a crises. If mom is encouraging her to act like she has a crises, perhaps she will even believe she has a crises.
Maybe it's real, but if someone really has such a sensitivity to peanuts that the mere smell of them represents a threat to their life, they most assuredly should not allow themselves to be exposed to peanuts even accidentally.
Girl should go around in a bubble. Mom should probably go around in a straight jacket.
Have you never heard of "Munchhausen syndrome by proxy"?
Look up factitious disorder. It’s a real mental condition.
I think this perfectly describes these “nut allergies.”
I’ll accept that.
While onions aren’t a problem on planes, he won’t get on a plane becuase then he will be locked into the space with no escape. He doesn’t go into restaurants or produce aisles either. I’ve even stopped growing onions in the hydroponics because it does pose a risk to him if he visits.
This is a rational response to such a problem.
the Mayo also has an extensive article on peanut allergy.
I looked around and the general consensus from actual doctors seems to be allergies don’t kick off just because of peanut aroma.
IT ISN’T THE ‘ODOR’. IT IS THE ACTUAL DUST FROM THE PEANUTS WHICH TRAVELS THROUGH THE AIRPLANE.
Why was the girl not wearing an N95 mask and latex gloves?
——————————————————————————
As we know, that equipment did not necessarily keep people from getting Covid. So it probably would not have helped this poor girl either.
Get on a nut free flight. That will eliminate te any contact with Democrats or liberals.
It cannot be that a person who sees a peanut eater in row 10, makes everything better by telling him to put them away. What about the snickers eater in row 15. What about the peanuts that have been sitting out until she saw them. What about the rest of the plane. What about the rest of the airport. I can and do buy peanuts in the airport.
What about the 200 people on the plane during the previous flight. You are trying to turn this into a binary situation. Its not. There are lots of peanut dust particles in an airport and in a plane.
The girl has to go through life as though peanuts are everywhere. Because peanuts are everywhere. There are people with such allergies toward many different foods and some that are allergic to plants and molds and dust mites. Some who get the same reactions as this girl gets.
I am not ignorant. This girl and her mother have to be able to live in a peanut world. Others live in a world of shell fish and almonds and mold. I get that anaphylactic shock is real. I am not contesting that at all. I am contesting that this girl or her mother can sanitize the world. When you go down this path there are thousands of things that kill people. There are millions of people who can kill other people with just contact of breath, spit or skin. We still allow mountain lions rattle snakes and scorpions. We even let murders out of jail. You don’t get to make a safe world.
Yes, he should have complied but can you really blame him for not given the absurdity of the situation and conflicting information (yes, seeing the kid with no gear conflicts with the stated threat).
You’re supposed to follow police orders too, but that doesn’t mean they can just walk down the street barking out commands and expect them to be followed.
It’s not like the guy was fiddling with the emergency exit latch and was told not to mess with it.
So, you’re right in that their orders need to be followed, however, this is not the DPRK and we’re not used to immediate obedience to everything. Hence, I have sympathy for both the guy and kid here. I’m not surprised there was at least one person on the flight that did not comply given the scene as presented in the article.
An N95 actually might be very useful against particulates like peanut dust.
It does sound unbelievable.
If I didn’t have a done with an allergy like that I wouldn’t believe it either.
Move her ass to another seat. But no, airline authoritarianism uber alley.
Yes, I can blame him. He was told not to do something for the safety of another passenger. Is there any indication that he was mentally incapable of understanding a simple instruction?
If I didn’t have a done son with an allergy like that I wouldn’t believe it either.
I don’t disagree with anything you said.
So, if you’re on a plane, and the announcement is made that someone is hyper-allergic to peanuts, and could you please refrain from eating them for the duration of the flight, do you just eat them anyway as a big F you? Or do you shrug your shoulders and say “okay, thats a little weird, but whatever” and wait until you get off the plane?
Anyone suspect Munchausen’s in the mother’s case? She’s getting a lot of press.
