From the King of Kings of the East and West, the Great Khan. To Qutuz the Mamluk, who fled to escape our swords. You should think of what happened to other countries and submit to us. You have heard how we have conquered a vast empire and have purified the earth of the disorders that tainted it. We have conquered vast areas, massacring all the people. You cannot escape from the terror of our armies. Where can you flee? What road will you use to escape us? Our horses are swift, our arrows sharp, our swords like thunderbolts, our hearts as hard as the mountains, our soldiers as numerous as the sand. Fortresses will not detain us, nor armies stop us. Your prayers to God will not avail against us. We are not moved by tears nor touched by lamentations. Only those who beg our protection will be safe. Hasten your reply before the fire of war is kindled. Resist and you will suffer the most terrible catastrophes. We will shatter your mosques and reveal the weakness of your God and then will kill your children and your old men together. At present you are the only enemy against whom we have to march.

“Resist and you will suffer the most terrible catastrophes.” Cowards alway talk a big game.
History: one Frank defeated on average 25 Saracens and ten Templars on average defeated 300 Saracens.
Why did some of the Crusades fail? Lacks of support.
And why did the Apollos stop at 16 in 1972? Lack of support.
If they wanted to, the Americans and Europeans could delete the Saracens today in day. If they wanted to.
The Mongols were not cowards I think?
Just finished “Empire of the Summer Moon” which was about the 40 year campaign against the Comanches. As light mounted archers similar to the Mongols, they had 1 glaring weakness... They’d typically refuse combat against a serious mounted opponent aggressively handled and frequently not engage at all. The Mamlukes were heavy cavalry and so I suspect the Mongols had similar problems.
A guy named McAuliffe said “Nuts” to KHAN!!!
: )
The West loved Tamerlane until their leftist college professors changed his name to Timur.
Why did some of the Crusades fail? Lacks of support.Specifics aside, the general reason is due to the East/West split in the Church.
I knew a GI who served under him at Bastogne.
Well that was his name...
I just can’t stand this cultural relativism in foreign names... Drives me nuts to hear English speakers say “Paree”, “Keeve” or “Mayheeco.”
One of the worst academics that I encounter who does this is Patrick Wyman of Tides of History podcast who thinks he can pronounce every ancient tell or archeological site in the local language. Not only makes it impossible to know what he’s saying, it’s an intellectual fraud to hold that Anglicization of words is incorrect or somehow racist.
As Mark Twain noted, “foreigners always spell better than they pronounce.”
Oh you mean like the people who say “Ching-hiss Haan”?
Never heard of him. But I might know his cousin, Gangis Can.
This post is a very good illustration of the underlying force that influences a lot of Putin’s attitude and behavior toward Ukraine and total war. It also indicates a lot of the background the Russian people bring to their attitude toward Putin.
Actually, the previous Golden Horde invasion was the Mongol invasion of Europe. When Ogedei Khan died, Batu, the head of the GH, stopped his invasion of Europe and fell back to the Russian steppes. The Il-Khans, Hulagu’s faction was focused only on the Middle East.
LOL - John Kerry creme de la creme of American pretentious fops.
As far as being ruthless? OH..I dunno, The Normans did pretty good in that regard concerning the total destruction of England after William the bastard took over.
Fail to swear total allegiance? That is OK, They just killed and burned every GD thing in site and left the rest to die of starvation.
4 Norman kings..and then came the Plantagenets. The longest family feud in the history of the world.
So, I guess the rumors are not true that Hulugu spent Christmas in Cambodia?
LOL - swift boaters go with ' not true'...
