I just can’t stand this cultural relativism in foreign names... Drives me nuts to hear English speakers say “Paree”, “Keeve” or “Mayheeco.”
One of the worst academics that I encounter who does this is Patrick Wyman of Tides of History podcast who thinks he can pronounce every ancient tell or archeological site in the local language. Not only makes it impossible to know what he’s saying, it’s an intellectual fraud to hold that Anglicization of words is incorrect or somehow racist.
As Mark Twain noted, “foreigners always spell better than they pronounce.”
