The Texas shooting shows the futility of arming teachers
MSNBC ^ | May 25, 2022 | Zeeshan Aleem

Hardcore opponents of gun control in the U.S. often respond to school shootings by proposing to arm teachers or add armed security guards to schools. But the inability of police to stop the gunman at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, before he killed at least 19 children and two teachers Tuesday exposes the poor reasoning behind that proposal.

While all the details of the shooting are not yet clear, authorities’ accounts revealed that the gunman was confronted by multiple armed police officers — yet they were unable to stop him before he killed nearly two dozen people.

The gunman reportedly crashed his truck in a ditch near the campus before entering the school, and police officers arrived at the school after a report of that crash.

According to CBS News’ summary of Texas Department of Public Safety Lt. Christopher Olivarez’s account, the shooter “stormed Robb Elementary School in the small city of Uvalde shortly after crashing his car in the area and immediately engaged in gunfire with state troopers on the scene. The gunman shot several police officers and then locked himself in a classroom.”

-snip

According to various reports, after local officers called for backup, a specialized tactical unit made it into the classroom a full hour after the gunman entered the school, and an agent of an elite law enforcement unit was involved in killing the gunman. (That agent was injured in the process.)

Given those details, I find it increasingly impossible to understand how one could believe that the solution to school shootings is arming teachers or having a security guard protecting every school. If a group of police officers couldn’t stop a shooter, then why would we expect an individual teacher or security guard to do better?

They could not be more incorrect. Just watching this argument on America’s Voice where the guest points out in 22 years not one shooting has occurred in any school where teachers are concealed carry.
This is WARPED reasoning at its best.

It does not discredit the idea of arming teachers. What teachers were armed here?

Skip opinions and theories.
Observe what the ACTUAL experience is from arming teachers.
That is what they are doing in Israel and it stopped terrorists shooting up school kids.

He encounted 2 cops and a security guard before ever going into the school.

You make a well reasoned comment. Having school staff armed is worthwhile in a deterrent aspect. Therefore, I support it. But to provide adequate defense from surprise attack requires something on the order of nuclear weapon etc. security arrangements.

Well, when the teachers were armed with just their fingers to pretend to shoot the bad people, then, yes, ‘arming’ them failed.

It seems that “zeeshan’s” logic is a bit flawed. The armed teachers would have already been inside and would have plugged him when he walked through the doors. This is an excellent time to push forward w/o the the Texas “Marshalls” Plan, with armed concealed carry teachers. As the dims say, nothing has worked so let us try something new.

Only a complete idiot would agree with it.

And there lies the problem, one idiot writer, or one idiot talking head, and they influence the idiots out there in the masses so Brandon can remain at 20% approval. Therefore we can conclude that 20% of the population are idiots, now that there is some science.

The gunman shot several police officers

How did a dirt poor misfit learn to shoot so well against trained law enforcement officers, with a weapon he just got? (He did this before he entered the school).

Police were waiting for the perk to run out of bullets. These Cops, sheriffs, etc.. should resign. We need no more cowards in uniforms.

“Encountered” in what way? Ran away from them and into the school, exchanged fire? I am not sure if you are trying to agree with the author or just making an observation.

Now that is a great picture. I can picture in my mind the guy saying to himself when he straps the pistol on every day before going to work, “I will die before they get one of my children.”

Police stood outside for close to an hour while the guy rampaged through the school. They were worthless.

An armed teacher would be defending HIMSELF and his kids. He wouldn’t be expected to GO in, he would already BE in.

The fact that this was a gun free zone escapes this twit.

Another shining example of federal overreach.

The wrong question was asked.
Instead of asking why they couldn't stop him, ask why they didn't stop him?
Were these officers armed? If you were an armed security officer who was responsible for the safety of young children, why wouldn't you confront and detain an 18 year old (who obviously has no business at an elementary school) who was carrying a rifle?
