Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Tuesday warned that eliminating abortion rights would damage the U.S. economy and 'set women back decades.'
'I believe that eliminating the right of women to make decisions about when and whether to have children would have very damaging effects on the economy and would set women back decades,' she said at a Senate Banking Committee hearing.
Yellen was asked about the draft Supreme Court opinion that indicated justices support overturning Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 case that legalized abortion, and the effect such a decision would have on the economy.
'It enabled many women to finish school that increase their earning potential and allowed women to plan and balance their families and careers,' Yellen said of the case. 'And research also shows that it had a favorable impact on the well being and earnings of of children.'
'There are many research studies that have been done over the years looking at the economic impacts of access or lack thereof to abortion. And it makes clear that denying women access to abortion increases their odds of living in poverty,' she added.
Politico's publishing of the draft opinion - which could be changed before officially announced at the end of the Supreme Court's session this summer - set off a national uproar.
Democrats have pushed for abortion to secured by federal law. Republicans claimed the leak was done to try and use public opinion and protests to pressure the justices.
Protests have risen up around the country and protesters are staking out the Washington D.C. homes of the Supreme Court judges. The high court itself has become ground central with daily protests. Fences have been raised around the building.
In Tuesday's hearing, Republican Senator Tim Scott pushed back at Yellen's assertion, however.

“set women back decades“
Fine by me.
This is powerful stupid.
They'll have to start wearing bloomers and bonnets again.
Oh, the humanity!
The truth is the opposite of whatever they say.
Send these “its” to Ashcanistan. They’ll get to see the real getting set back decades is like first hand.
Why is she getting involved in state policy? She should focus on the fed.
Utter nonsense.
Women will be set back to a time before they slaughtered unborn babies by the millions?
Women should not be so irresponsible about having sexual intercourse.
Who needs women so callous about their role as nurturing and caring mothers?
It will sure do wonders for the little girls that are not aborted - won’t they become women now?
Just shows how insane these left wing crazies are. Imagine, if you will, a Treasury Sec. in the 1950s whining about abortion rights. Stay in your lane, ####!
Polling suggests that the public is much more concerned about the economy than in Roe v Wade. This is Yellen’s lame attempt at a tie-in.
Holder + wife = abortion clinic owner
Killing more babies doesn't help!
Janet, The fact you've failed at your first responsibility is NOT a sign you should start branching out!
Given how much YellenIdiot is doing to wreck the US economy, not sure what she is indicating makes a hill of beans.....
It’s far greater to be a barren spinster with 8 strains of herpes, 13 cats, and gallon after gallon of boxed wine.
Clearly women are way happier now…
This moron is actually the Secretary of the Treasury.
Ridiculous statement
She doesn’t belong in any important governmental post
And, of course, we should take her comments seriously. After all, she’s managing a robust economy.
Let the States determine their own abortion laws, dumbass. That IS what the constitution says after all.
