Wife and I are planning a weeks trip to NYC, I’ve never been so I’m looking for recommendations on things to see or do. We’re planning on at least 1 broadway show and the MOMA but if you know of a cool thing or something really interesting I’d love to hear your suggestion, thanks in advance.
I have been to NYC many times.
I have done all of the items on the list.
In addition to visiting the various places you’ve seen in movies or heard about, (Empire State building, historical event sites, Grand Central Station, 911 Memorial, Statue of Liberty, etc., etc.), you might enjoy a current Broadway show such as Music man with Hugh Jackman. There are some great art museums…
But there are also some cool but less well known places such as the old Tenement Museum building which is a restored old building showing what it was like when waves of (legal) immigrants came and lived their in the 1800’s and 1900’s, along with copies of the actual US Census records showing the names and countries of origin of the people who lived packed into those crowded accommodations. It is a very interesting museum, IMHO.
Also, a helicopter ride around Manhattan can be fun… and the hop-on-hop-off day bus tours around the city can give you a good initial visual orientation.
I would recommend checking Trip Advisor to tailor your time there.
I typically enjoy an hour at Time Square, although the painted topless females sometimes present are annoying. Once we encountered a totally naked woman there in body paint, which was a shocker, especially to my wife.😱

“But, if you’re set, then you’ll need your “situational awareness” on 24/7 when on the streets..”
And be sure to bring your gun...New York is very gun friendly.
I live in central NY State, and have been to NY City many times. Probably one of the most meaningful places I visited was Ellis Island, because my father, his two brothers, and my grandparents came through there from Holland in 1913. I think my last trip to New York City was in 2007, and I'm sure a lot has changed. When I went to Paris in 2006, I discovered that both cities stunk to high heavens. Both cities have high traffic, and the overwhelming smell of gas fumes. Add the smell of urine for NY City, but at least Paris had older buildings.
I've always wanted to, but never got to Fraunces Tavern. It's where Washington gave his farewell address to his officers. It still serves meals, and there's a museum upstairs.
According to my family tree, I had ancestors who settled in New Amsterdam in the 1600's. I wish I'd known that when I previously visited the area.
Thanks!
Katz’s deli and when you give the guy behind the counter the ticket, fold up a dollar with it. Your three piece of pastrami sandwich will turn into a 3 inch mountain of pastrami. Get the DR Brown’s cream soda as well.
Shopping on Orchard Street- right own the road from Katz- used to be pretty good- though i’ve not been there in a while. Great deals.
Shopping in SOHO is overrated- overpriced and you’re better off on 5th Avenue,
“there,” not “their” 🙈
I drove by the Intrepid one day in my big rig. I did part time driving back in the 1980s. I wondered what the heck is that airplane doing on top of a building. I soon realized just what I was looking at. I resolved to go there with my kids long ago. We never made it.
One day, my now grown son took his family there. I was jealous a bit, but at least he finally did get there. Very good suggestion.
Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are “musts,” IMHO.
Times Square. Lock down your wallet first.
What is the current vaccine mandate policy in NYC?
-Finish up at New York-Presbyterian if you are lucky.
I was really going to stay off this thread, but I just can’t believe that no one recommended that the first thing you should do is to get on one of the hop-on-hop-off tour buses that give you an overview of Manhattan. (Preferably on a warm sunny day so you can ride on top in the open air.) There will be a guide pointing out sites as you go, over the bus’s PA system. There are competing lines and they all have reps hawking tickets at the major stopping points. (I know Times Square is one such stopping point.)

Nice account of your experience. Always good to see you on the board. Hip-hip for a favorable hands-on Bloody Mary recommendation.
Full disclosure: I have not been to NYC or Fraunces Tavern, but did learn about the farewell speech by George Washington, to his Officer Corp, taking place here, and a first-person account exists of the speech and can be seen in a museum section of the tavern.

I agree! I wouldn’t waste a cent of my hard-earned money in a blue state or city.
Do NOT, for ANY REASON, go into the subway. Born and raised in NYC in the bad old days, and it was NEVER as bad as it is now. People are just getting randomly killed there on an almost daily basis, and it’s not confined to bad neighborhoods.
Stay out of the subway, keep your wits about you, PAY ATTENTION.
Good luck!
