Prophet Muhammad's Cloak Draws Muslim Faithful to Istanbul Mosque

People flocked to Hırka-ı Şerif Mosque in Istanbul’s Fatih district on Friday as an heirloom of the Prophet Muhammad was put back on display after two years.

The cloak worn by the prophet has been carefully preserved for nearly 1,400 years, attracting a large crowd to the mosque where it is kept by descendants of Uwais al-Qarni, a Muslim believer to whom the prophet gifted the garment. Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya and Fatih Mayor Ergün Turan were among the dignitaries attending the “reopening” ceremony for the cloak. The crowd listened to a recitation of verses from the Quran and soon visitors were invited in.

The religious artifact is only put on public display during the holy fasting month of Ramadan, which is considered the most sacred of the months in the Islamic calendar. However, after the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in Turkey, the display was banned.

On Friday, the most sacred day of the week for Muslims, hours before collective Friday prayers, a few visitors at a time were allowed into the room where the cloak is kept behind glass. Outside, women and men queuing to be admitted through separate entrances caused a crowd. But they did not complain as they were happy to have the “once in a year” opportunity to see something that belonged to Islam’s most sacred figure. Some burst into tears while others recited prayers.

The cloak will be on display until April 29, two days before the start of Ramadan Bayram (Eid al-Fitr), the Muslim holiday which marks the end of the holy month.

“I couldn’t sleep last night because I was too excited. I have been waiting for this moment (for two years),” Leyla Kahraman, a visitor who came to the mosque with her 9-year-old son said. “I love the prophet very much and am happy to be here,” her son Ömer Faruk said.

It is interesting that it is on display in Istanbul. The cloak normally stays in Afghanistan unless this is a different cloak.

FWIW I found this back story interesting and illustrates how muslims lie, cheat and steal.

From wikipedia article - Cloak of Muhammed

"The cloak itself is locked away inside the mosque and is rarely seen. It has been guarded by the same family for over 250 years. Its guardians have traditionally only shown the cloak to recognized leaders of Afghanistan, although in times of great crisis such as natural disasters, it has been publicly displayed as a means of reassurance. The Tomb of Ahmad Shah Durrani is located adjacent to the Shrine of the Cloak."

"The cloak was given to Amir Ahmad Shah Durrani (regarded as the founder of modern Afghanistan) by Amir Murad Beg of Bukhara (in modern Uzbekistan) in 1768 in order to solidify a treaty between the two leaders.

An alternate account states that when Ahmad Shah had traveled to Bukhara, he saw the cloak of Muhammad. He then decided to take the artifact with him to Kandahar, and asked whether he could "borrow" the cloak from its keepers. They, worrying that he might try to remove it from Bukhara, told him it could not be taken from the city.

Ahmad Shah then is said to have pointed to a heavy stela of stone firmly planted in the ground, saying that he would never take the cloak far from the stone. The keepers, gratified at his answer, handed him the cloak. Ahmad Shah then took the cloak, ordered the stone slab to be dug up, and carried them both back with him to Kandahar, where the stone now stands near his mazar (tomb)"

LOL

“The size of the cloak seems a little bit too big.”

And one arm is 4x the size of the other!

If you fold it up the right way it would make a nice bed for a dog.

I guess it was the 12th imam, not Mo, that jumped down the Iranian well to hide. Although I think he’s out of hiding according to Ahmadinejad a few years back. Sorry but I was confused because their names were the same....

* 868 AD / 255 AH Abu’l-Kasim Muhammad (which is the name of the prophet himself)

Should be a hoot. Wahhabis, especially, regard artifacts of any kind as vile and will destroy them either officially or violently. Mosques that are covered with ornate murals inside are whitewashed. They even destroyed an adobe house in the atrium of the Saudi National Library, because Mohammed may have stayed there.

What bunk. Mahomet was not a “prophet” in any sense of the word. He was epileptic, a murderous thief, child abuser, rapist and had so many other fine attributes. No wonder they called him the “perfect man.”

Muhammad was a "nobody" until 50 years after his death. 680 AD was then Abd ibn al-Zubayr adopted Muhammad's religion to aid in his creation of a new empire in the same way that Constantine had used Christianity, creating the claim that he ruled by the will of Allah.

Coins struck in the Islamic year 66 (685/686 in the Christian calendar) by Abd ibn al-Zubayr bearing his name along with Muhammad's are the oldest artifacts in existence indicating that the prophet Muhammad ever existed. Until then, Muhammad's very existence had been lost to history, so there's isn't a snowflake's chance in Mecca that someone thought to make a point to preserve a garment that Muhammad had worn -- if in fact he ever existed -- and keep safe until his religion finally took hold.
