San Leandro Teacher Allegedly Tells Class: 'I Have Shot Kids' (Younger Than Him)

A middle school teacher in San Leandro has been removed from the classroom after allegedly directing threatening remarks at his students. The Bancroft Middle School teacher's comments in the class were apparently all recorded and posted to social media.

In one of the recordings, which the district is investigating, the teacher appears to go on a rant in front of his class about a student who he claims was misbehaving. The teacher is then heard referencing his prior military career and telling the class that in the past he'd shot kids younger than that student.

"I’ve been through three tours in combat in the most dangerous places on Earth, and I am not in a position to let some kid talk back to me. Period. That’s just how it is. I have shot kids younger than him," the teacher can be heard saying in the recording, referring to an unknown student in the class.

Later in the same recording, the teacher appears to tell a student that he’s lucky things have changed and that he’s no longer able to put his hands on him and take him out of the class himself

The district was apparently first made aware of the teacher's comments after several recordings of him began circulating on social media earlier this week.

In another recording, the teacher, who is now being investigated by the district, is captured telling a student, "You're probably about 20 percent undersized for your age, so I suggest when you get into high school, you shut your mouth, because guys like me, who are way, way bigger than you, are going to pound your little butt into the ground."

San Leandro Unified School District superintendent Dr. Michael McLaughlin, released the following statement on Monday:

"I am writing to make you aware of an incident that has been brought to our attention regarding inappropriate statements made by a teacher at Bancroft Middle School to students in their class. The district is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident and in doing so, the personnel involved have been removed from the classroom. Additionally, the Bancroft students, staff, and families who have been affected by this incident are also being supported in processing this concerning event," said McLaughlin's statement.

So far the district has yet to release the name of the teacher under investigation.

The district is asking anyone with information about the alleged incidents to report them to Bancroft Middle School's administration team.

I wish my friend who grew up in San Leandro was still alive - he'd get a real kick out of this.

I had my first male teacher in fourth grade at Cayuga Heights Elementary outside Ithaca. That was back in 1960. I don’t know if he was a WW II veteran, but I DO know you did’t act up in Mr. Razzman’s class.

He never threatened to shoot any of us, but he had firm control of that class. Of course, we were docile suburban kids and, if anybody DID act up, Dad would take care of the problem when we got home. So we had the double threat of Mr. Razzman and Dad.

>>> “I have shot kids younger than him,” the teacher can be heard saying. <<<

Now that he needs a new career I’d suggest a job with the Red Army. He’d fit in just fine.

My late brother, who was a line backer in high school, was the teacher to which they sent all the problem kids when he taught third grade. This was when the “rewards system” was in full swing. This changed when the assistant principle asked little Johnnie, not his real name, what reward his teacher had given him to sit still and quietly do his work, and Johnnie replied: “He said he wouldn’t hit me.”

After that, my brother had to get more creative. He explained to his class that he just couldn’t threaten to hit unruly students anymore. He explained to them that he would have to “sweeten them up” with the chocolate coating machine that they kept in the coat room. He taught the students how to pantomime getting the machine out and loading it with chocolate, etc. The next unruly student gave up after my brother started to walk over to pick him up and dump him in the machine.

“processing” - one those words that should be lost.

I had a drill instructor say to me: “I’ve killed better men than you”. Basic training. I was an adult.

In the 50s, had a WWII-vet ex-Marine in my public school in a slightly rough area of NYC. Nobody messed with him.

He was famous for making disruptive kids bend over in front of the entire lunchroom (because lunch was their favorite time for harassing other children) and then kicking them in the backside while we all cheered.

It worked. Granted, a little harsh...but I betcha none of those kids ever went to jail, if only because he made them look ridiculous and we were laughing at them.

when i went to school teachers woudl grab students by the neck and pin them against the walls- seen it several times- even had a lunch cafeteria dude jump over the counter- ruin across the tops of the long tables- food flying everywhere- and tackled 2 kids who were fighting-

Kids didn’t act up much back then- but when they did- they got whopped for it- Everyone survived just fine too- noone suffered any ‘irreparable psychological damage’ because they KNEW they were the cause of the problem and just accepted the consequences- I guess kids were just tougher back when?-

In 1963 I had a Spanish teacher who left Cuba to escape Castro. She would swear at kids in Spanish and had full control of the classroom.

Sounded more like he was letting the kid know he wasn’t afraid more than threatening the kid.

Had a teacher in fifth grade, old vet from WW-II and Korea. You had the audacity to talk back( I never did) he’d sometimes punch or verbally slandered. Once the guy broke a kids arm. He was teaching the next day. Kid in a cast.

Aside from that he was a good teacher and kept a very respectful bunch of students.

He probably got a reprimand I dunno. That was 1968

I’m not going to judge this guy too harshly. I taught middle school in the inner city of Los Angeles for 11 years. Those kids can make you really, really mad. They just get under your skin. Sooner or later, you’re likely to snarl something you shouldn’t.
