These Are The Old Car Features That Should Make A Comeback
Jalopnik ^ | 19 April 2022 | Adam Ismail

Here's to the days of big windows, bumpers built for bumping and foot-operated controls.

Round, Sealed Headlights Yeah, I know they’re not the greatest aerodynamically, but replacing a bulb on a modern car sometimes requires partially disassembly of the front end just to get at the bulb.

My co-worker just spend $225 to replace ONE BULB on her Acura

Amber Rear Turn Signals The safety of tri-colored tail lights. Red for stop. Amber for turn or hazard. White for reverse.

Replaceable Head Units Or better yet, just make it an actual iPad so I can replace it with a better one that runs an app of the car’s software.

Imagine if you could pop off that dumb less-useful-than-a-tablet tablet on top of any given Mazda’s dashboard and fit an iPad that actually works.

Not-Power Windows Crank windows. More reliable than power windows, much finer control over movements, and I don’t have to turn the ignition on to use it.

One of my buddies has a (very) small business remanufacturing those auto dimmers. They use vacuum tubes and early generation photocells.

Now you can buy replacement panels for most popular cars from Taiwan. They 3D scan the original and build stamping dies. You can even get a complete new Mustang and Camaro body shells welded together by an outfit in Florida.

“Green” soy based wire coating...

This doesn’t happen to cars and trucks with petroleum based wire coatings.

Then, where would I put my cans of beer?

On the seat between your thighs like the rest of us w/o cup holders.

I have always thought that someone could make money by having a website that evaluated motor vehicles on their engineering merit.

What I mean by engineering merit is to evaluate parts and whole vehicles by how well they were designed and used.

visual beauty
practicality
well designed interiors
how practical to repair
How easy to maintain

and probably others. I have had great vehicles that had engineering design flaws like having to remove the engine to do what would be considered minor repairs in other vehicles.

The horrors that the governemt have wreaked upon us has left us all with these unattractive beetle looking things .

Subaru outback has a horrific paddle shifting device on the column for reaching low gears when they could have more easily been contained in a second shifter on the transmission.

Also, removing the chach-ca from the steering wheel that no one ever looks at would be great.

So would bringing back buttons so one does not need to take eyes off the road in order to change stations or rewind.

I vote for keyless entry for the reason that many crimes are committed in the parking lot of the big box stores.

Keyless entry enables the women to quickly open the door even though her arms are full of packages, baby or whatnot, rather than having do dig her key ring out of her purse and select the proper key all the while concentrating on the keys rather than her surroundings.

______________

problem is that we put up with crime.

I read a bunch of the comments on this thread and it would seem that what many are yearning for are the cars we grew up around. I figure that this is not literally what they want as most of the cars of our youth are either rusty hulks or expensive restorations.

Personally, I did choose that option. I have two vehicles; a 69 Mustang for general driving and a 37 Chevy pickup for utility needs. They represent a trade-off, foregoing the conveniences of modern cars in favor of the style of classic American iron.

my old dog was trained to bark if someone knocked on the front door. he quickly learned the sound of the UPS truck from a block and a half away and ran to the front door waiting for a knock...early warning system.

“Spark plugs you can reach and change yourself.”

All design engineers should spend one year working in a garage repairing cars they designed the previous year. It would change their designs. When they changed engines sideways and forgot about how to get to a spark plug without seeing it and all by feel it was a sad day.

“But hey; whatever floats your boat..”

My first was a ‘71 280SEL. Just had bulbs like a normal car. This was the entire headlight assembly. Comes as a unit with the swivel beams, LEDs, the works. Replacement was excessive, IMO. Didn’t really float my boat, but it had to be replaced.

Factory supplied car jacks that actually lift high enough to change a tire without having to tote a brick or two to put on top of the jack.

The reason a 55000 dollar car has a jack that is worth 5 dollars is they ran out of 3 dollar jacks.

You do what you have to do to get it roadworthy again. Did you know it was a single $2,700 unit when you bought the car? Probably not.
