What the hell is wring with "popcorn" ceilings?

I've been watching the fixer upper shows, and I don't get the hatred of "popcorn ceilings".

Because popcorn should be in one’s tummy while watching a good movie and not glued to one’s ceiling.

We got married in 1983 and bought our 1952 rancher the same time. The kitchen had been refreshed in the 60s and included a gorgeous avocado GE electric range with oven. We used it until ten years ago when we gutted the kitchen. It was an indestructible beast and still worked well!

Water beds are great for sleeping, but for sex not so much. Like playing hand ball against the curtains.

No recoil.

I'm 80, when I want recoil I shoot my S&W 357 Magnum and maybe I'll try playing handball against the curtains.

When I have sex, it's an event, and if I want recoil, there are three other beds to choose.

When you are a kid, you can look at the popcorn ceiling over your bed and see shapes like when you look at clouds.

During the same era you could take LSD and accomplish the same thing, without the popcorn ceiling.

You must be very careful scraping it off because it can very easily release asbestos fibers and create asbestos dust. As others have noted, it's the asbestos fibers and dust when inhaled into the lungs that is a real danger as it can result in asbestosis years later. Even wearing a particle mask won't protect you from the dust (just as it won't protect you from the Fauci Flu, for that matter).

From my five decades of environmental health and safety engineering experience, if I had to remove a textured ceiling I'd first have it tested for asbestos and, if asbestos is present, I would have it professionally removed, securely packaged and disposed at a licensed facility.

Although the use of asbestos, particularly in residences, was banned in 1980, there was a lot of asbestos materials in the material pipeline so it can be present in textured ceilings, vinyl tile and mastics in homes built years later. So, even if your home was built after 1980, it's a good idea to have a textured ceiling -- especially a "popcorn" ceiling -- tested for asbestos. You would take a small sample of the texture and send it to a lab licensed for asbestos testing ... only takes a few days to get the results.

I think it's best to avoid dealing with asbestos unless you really know what you're doing. Cheers!

They get dirty.

All those crevices hold on to dirt and can make it bad for allergy sufferers.

So I do not like them personally but if you have a ceiling that is not done properly it makes a quick fix.

If paint is applied correctly in many, many coats (on purpose) with a coarse roller and dried between coats, you can achieve a finish that looks like leather. I'm talking 15 to 20 coats. But achieving that great look is beyond the budget and the skill level of most homeowners.

Water beds were awesome in the winter

I had a water bed for many years too - didn't hate it, but when my back started going south and I needed more support. My point is/ was, back in the day you could not go into any mall without finding at least one and usually several water bed stores. Water beds were just so "in" back then. Now days you would be hard pressed to find a water bed store in any major mall - not that they don't exist, but they definitely are not as popular as they once were.

I always like to see where a basketball goal could be mounted on the walls of those “open concept” designs.

Can’t imagine what some of the heating and cooling bills are for those glorified barns.
