Yankees still unsure if unvaccinated can play in NYC as Mayor Adams says sports have to wait

With Opening Day in the Bronx less than three weeks away, the Yankees are no closer to knowing if they will have their full squad available. The private-sector vaccine mandate that has kept Nets star Kyrie Irving sidelined from games in Brooklyn could stop unvaccinated Yankees and Mets from playing in home games. Tuesday, Mayor Adams said professional athletes would have to wait their turn in the process of emerging from COVID restrictions.

The ticking clock is starting to worry Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

“I mean, a little bit now but we’ll handle that behind the scenes‚” Boone said after a spring training loss in Dunedin. “And it’ll be what it is.”

The Yankees had two players who had not been vaccinated as of last week, according to a source.

All private-sector workers in New York City must show proof that they have been vaccinated against COVID-19, according to the mandate.

“In New York no matter what you do, this is 8.8 million people and 30 million opinions, so you’re never going to satisfy New Yorkers,” said Adams. “You must go with the logic, your heart and the science.”

The Yankees would also face a problem with travel to Canada, which requires travelers to be fully vaccinated to enter the country right now. The Yankees have 10 regular season games scheduled in Toronto.

What will their season ticket holders and box holders think of that?

Well, if the team can't play because of Covid restrictions in the city, the ticket holders should be talking to the city officials. It's the city officials' fault.

Well, that's still the city officials' problem.

If the Yankees played elsewhere, there would be many of those season ticket holders who would gladly take a bunch of mini-vacations where the sun shines brighter and warmer (if they could afford them).

But, the city would lose millions in revenue and the local businesses would also lose a lot of business, and the city would lost a lot of prestige. Imagine the Yankees playing their home games in a completely different city. Heck, that might temp the Yankees organization into finding a different home elsewhere; imagine how the city officials would feel then, and imagine the local fans' rage against the city's mayor and officials. Biggest outrage in city history.
