You beat me to it.
My stripped down 1979 Fairmont was something like $3700.00 off the lot. I put down $700.00 and the payments were $92.00 per month even with high interest.
I learned to drive in a Maverick. I thought I was a lousy driver until the instructor told me it was a POS and the steering really was sloppy and the brakes were shot.
Hard to pull 8000 lbs without a truck or haul wood or a million things.
Poor soul. The city-apartment room writer apparently never bought a 2×4 or piece of plywood in his life.
All the auto mfrs recycle their old brand names. It’s already a trademarked name so it doesn’t cost them anything.
Ford got burned once in the 60’s when they tried to sell Mustangs in Europe and found they couldn’t use the name ‘Mustang’, because it was already owned by a company that had made delivery trucks under that name, though it hadn’t used it in like 20 years. They offered to sell the name to Ford for $100k but Ford refused and used a alphanumeric model number for the car in Europe....................
Same here! I learned on an old 1966 Ford F100, three on the tree.
My very impatient and short-tempered step-father taught me.
Here’s a video of the same model of truck and the shifter in use:

When I was in HS we had brand new cars in Driver’s Ed, supplied by a local car dealership. They had two steering wheels!.................
Do you have a hitch receiver?
I find that much of what you can do with a truck, I do with an aluminum rack in the hitch receiver and tie downs.
When I really need a truck I rent it.
I always thought a second wheel and brakes were ‘law’ until I started driving. The Maverick was terrible. I found learning in a Mitsubishi delivery van with a manual transmission was easier.

“Full-sized pickups have grown so monstrous that the market is hungry for a smaller version. “
Ditto this comment. Why? I have never figured out why auto makers facing the gas deal keep making bigger and bigger cars.
I am sick of sanctimonious jerks telling people what they “need”. Like adults can’t make decisions for themselves.
Bkmk
Agree.My first pick up was a Ford 1988 F 150, second 2003 F 150 and current is 2013 F 150 STX. Would never drive anything else _____
I remember when the Mav first came out, 1969?
My dad died in 1969. My mom traded our 1965 Lincoln Continental for a 1970 Maverick.
I had about a half dozen pickups before I realized that I had not had a wet or messy cargo in the bed for years. I switched to vans which allowed for a field warehouse, dry and secure wherever I was. Of course, an empty van is for crap in the rain or snow, but then so is a 2 wheel drive pickup. Hence, the 4WD van. Best choice.

The author is upset that people are buying this vehicle for the wrong reasons. Who cares?
