Now that I’ve read it, I see this article has even less substance than I had assumed it might have.
The best evidence in the article is summarized as “People did a computer analysis and they say Q is Ron Watkins.”

I think also that Trump wanted it used as a diversion for his own reasons. This means it potentially did have his involvement, even if it was almost all disinfo. I think some truth was sprinkled throughout. But I’m not going to ridicule anyone like so many asshats on this forum.
If a story starts off referring to “Qanon”, it can be summarily dismissed, as that term is totally made up. There is not, nor has there ever been something named Qanon.

I don’t believe it was. Yes, many of the Q posts were absurd, like the Kennedy stuff. But I’ve seen many people believe in absurd things outside of the Q thread. And not all the Q thread followers DID believe the more far out stuff.
What I found really good about Q was the constant encouragement to study for ourselves. I read extensively before the Q thread, but I read massively more after the thread started.
The thread encouraged us to bring back information on the Russian/Hilliary lies and look way beyond the main stream media. Gathering the information into one spot had the useful result that you kept the base info in your head as one after another new pieces of information came to light.
I was perfectly happy to have no idea whether Q was real or not. It never mattered to me. What mattered was that people kept exploring and thinking about what was being done to Trump, the focus of all my interest.
We filter out the irrational from the rational every day in everything we read. There was value in the Q thread when you apply that same level of filtering.

Heck, think of that poor older woman with a walker in Canada. She got out in the freezing cold for hours to protest. She risked everything, knowing how they are being retalited against.
Yes, she was seriously injuried and could have been killed. She knew the risks and still went out to declare her fight for freedom. She did more than millions sitting home.
What Q did was sort of run a LARP which got everyone looking for the roots and tentacles of the deep state. We are all aware of just how broad, how deep, and how filthy rotten and corrupt the swamp sewer really runs. We could never hear another word about Q and the lesson is learned.
I suspect that what the filthy liars at NY Slimes is onto is the notion - QANON was a conspiracy theory started by two guys. Therefore the deep state doesn't exist. Therefore give it up and do as we who are looking out for your own best interests tell you.
Bingo. The article is pseudoscience:
1) Quote from the article: “The researchers who worked on the identification told The Times they hope unmasking Q will loosen QAnon’s hold on people.”
So the “researchers” had (and have) an agenda. They were seeking to prove what they needed to prove to further that agenda.
So the “research” can only be considered agitprop, based on that alone.
2) As a linguist, I call BS on the claim that people can’t change their style to match that of someone else. Actors do it all the time. So do comedians. And as Flick Lives said, the smaller the source text in question, the easier it is to emulate the style perfectly. It’s even easier when the style used in the source text was deliberately made using a synthetic style, and not the author’s normal writing style. And that was very obviously the case with Q’s posts.
3) The closeness of the (alleged) stylistic match was not specified quantitatively. They only offered a qualitative assessment of “closest” match, not a quantitative measure with error bars and confidence levels. Actual scientists consider *qualitative* assessments to be “hand waving,” not science.
To say nothing of failing to use a comprehensive set of test authors. Nor was it a blinded, randomized, controlled trial. They didn’t even have a control group.
Nor was it published in a peer-reviewed journal of linguistics. It was published, instead, in newspapers—otherwise known as propaganda rags.
I think most logical, reasonable, clear-headed people who followed 4chan back then knew it was a hoax. It was the gullible minded that fell for it.
