I think most logical, reasonable, clear-headed people who followed 4chan back then knew it was a hoax. It was the gullible minded that fell for it.

The first few predictions were enough to convince me it was a silly hoax. If you recall, they claimed that Hillary herself was already wearing an ankle bracelet, and Huma and many others were all about to be rounded up, which caused tremendous interest in the possibility.
But when nothing happened, instead of saying "I should have known it was too good to be true" many were so hungry for something like that to happen, they were somehow hooked on the false hope.
"Trust Sessions" should have convinced people it was all lies, but when it got the 50,000 indictments are sealed and the whole deep state is going to Gitmo in one fell sweep level, some people had unfortunately lost their minds. And if you dared even approach them as a concerned friend, they were so consumed with the group think they would attack you as if you were claiming their child was fathered by someone else.
In hindsight, I think the main reason that people were so brainwashed with the prospect was because Trump refused to denounce it. Many still believe that until Trump denounces it, it's still true. Some probably wouldn't even denounce it if Trump did at this point.
But he should have, because it ultimately hurt him. Rather than keep his feet to the fire over people like Sessions, a lot of people just sat back and trusted the plan too much, when ultimately he didn't even win re-election.
Sorry if that hurts someone, but that is where we are with this story, which had a very unhappy ending.
