Details of the restaurant’s early days are scarce, but one H.V. “Homer” Paul took possession of the place in 1926, later losing it, perhaps in a card game, to a man named Hank Frey. Frey lost the place in turn to local rancher Gene Wade Jr. in a crаp game in 1945, and the Wades retained ownership for the next 45 years.

Why was this place not included: http://m.unionoysterhouse.com/pages/overview.html ? It claims to go back to 1826.

I’ve been there (Cattleman’s) a few times. It’s amazing how small and cramped it is, since it’s been in the same location forever. Really nice experience.

I’ve eaten at 3 of these: Commander’s Palace, Antoine’s and Keen’s Steakhouse.

I’ve eaten at the Columbia many times.......mostly in St.Augustine and a few times in Tampa

The Columbia is Old World decor.......very rich colors, beautifully resplendent
Many years ago they use to serve cold drinks in pewter goblets.......ice cold!
Our favorite is the 1905 ( the year they began)...salad
It is unique and we pair it with black beans and rice.
Their homemade bread is soooo good!

Really cool. I have actually seen two of them, and I bought some bagels in a Katz deli which was one of theirs but opened later in Brooklyn.

I've always wanted to go to Louis' Lunch. I just don't want to go to Connecticut.

I always thought the Cattleman’s Steakhouse in Fort Worth was one of the oldest but it opened in 1947. Just a young whippersnapper compared to these.

Thought so.

Riscky’s Steakhouse in Fort Worth, Steak house and Family-friendly eatery & bar serving meaty fare since 1927 in rustic, Western-themed digs.

Live in OKC. Eaten at cattlemen’s a lot of times over the years. Great steak. Interesting little place in the stockyards. Wear jeans, boots, and western shirt. Fit right in :)

This list is seriously wacked-out wrong.

Union Oyster House in Boston has been there since before the 1850s and has been continuously running since the 1890s:

Weidmann’s in Meridian, MS has been in operation since 1870:

I have eaten at both, and there must be plenty of others older than this faux list provides.

I visit Cattlemen’ Steakhouse a couple times a month- good eats. Have the dinner rolls too when you’re there.

This list is crap. Tujague’s in New Orleans dates to 1852. The Ashby Inn in Virginia was known to George Washington, as was Fraunces Tavern in NYC.

Ye Olde Union Oyster House (popularly known simply as “The Oyster House”) opened its doors in 1826 and bears the title of the oldest restaurant in the United States. The Bell-In-Hand Tavern first opened its doors in 1795 under the ownership of Jimmy Wilson. He was the retired town crier who had announced news of important events like the Boston Tea Party and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
