A metal detectorist has found what is believed to be one of England's earliest gold coins whilst searching farmland in Devon, on his first metal detecting search in over ten years.
The find happened last September and at first the man was completely unaware of just how rare the coin was - it's thought to be one of only eight in existence.
The coin is now going to be auctioned, and it could sell for as much as half a million pounds! ($670k).
The coin is made from gold and depicts King Henry III. It is thought to have been made in 1257.
It is just under an inch wide, and this is the first of its kind to be found in 260 years.
Only eight of these coins are known to exist, and almost all of them can only be seen in museums.
Experts think it shows the first portrait of a king upon the English throne since the time of William the Conqueror, who ruled from 1066 to 1087.
One side of the coin shows the portrait of the bearded and crowned Henry III upon his throne on the Great Pavement in Westminster Abbey.
There is a long cross, roses and pellets on the other side.

It’s a fair deal, all things considered.
I will say that many old homes in Europe have hidden rooms for many reasons, whether it be store or secret escape rooms. Hidden churches was a thing in Europe because of Europe’s tendency to persecute people who didn’t follow the state religion.
They do not tax by square footage. They have tax bands for various valuations of house for council tax purposes, but the bands are broad and the council tax is not very high. The tax is ad personam rather than ad rem.
A priest hole, maybe?

Most of it is underground.
He’s a property by trade, so he knows how to renovate spaces.
I would have kept quiet about the whole thing and just made it liveable.

Barnabas Sackett strikes again.
Oh yeah, I remember that now. Thanks!
The spittin’ image of his majesty!
Thanks! I spotted it in the threads file first. :^)
I would like to know how many loafs of bread it would buy when it was made. A good way to check inflation.
Found on farmland. Was it a “coinfield”?
Do we have any other metal detectorist / adventurers here?
I go out metal detecting all the time and it’s always so much fun to find hidden “treasure”. Sometimes it’s an old coin or a silver or gold ring, but not very often. Usually I dig up modern change and costume jewelry. I have dug up well over 1,000 coins in the past few years, many silver rings, and a couple gold ones. There’s plenty out there for me, but I don’t expect to find a treasure like the one mentioned in the article, however, it is possible. I want to get out tonight, but it’s too uncomfortably cold.
I knew him well
