Glaucoma is group of eye diseases that cause progressive vision loss through damage to the optic nerve. It is the second-leading cause of blindness.
Fruits and veggies are good sources of vitamins A and C, as well as the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin. These can protect against oxidative stress associated with damage to the optic nerve and other tissues of the eye in glaucoma. A study that included 584 Black women found that those who consumed three or more fruit or juice servings daily were 79% less likely to have glaucoma than those who had less than one.
Research has found a link between kale and spinach consumption and a reduced risk of glaucoma, the foundation said. Eating leafy greens is also linked to lower rates of inflammation, cancer, heart disease and even the eye disorder macular degeneration.
Nuts and seeds are good sources of vitamin E, important for keeping cells healthy and protecting them from free radical damage, which can break down protective retinal tissues.
It also suggests fish, particularly salmon, tuna, sardines and halibut, which have high levels of the omega-3 fatty acids that have been shown to lower glaucoma-related eye pressure.
A study in the British Journal of Ophthalmology found that people who drank at least one cup of hot tea daily lowered their glaucoma risk by 74% compared to those who did not.
The foundation also suggested chocolate, bananas, avocados, pumpkin seeds and black beans for their health benefits.
People who are already living with glaucoma should avoid foods that contribute to metabolic syndrome, obesity, blood pressure problems, and diabetes. A diet that helps maintain normal blood pressure and blood sugar helps reduce glaucoma risk.
Eating a healthy number of calories, and limiting carbohydrates may also have benefits for the eyes, it added.

“A study that included 584 Black women”
Did they study WHITE women, too?
Eat mangoes often. Have lots of Vitamin A and also C.
I’m safe, then...........................
And use your health insurance benefits.
Annual eye exam with an opthalmologist
They can find issues that have no symptoms
Usually drink about 3 sixteen ounce mugs of tea a day. Will that give me super vision?
I just had a laser treatment on my eye. Repaired a tiny whole in the retina
I drink loose leaf tea. The bag tea is simply intolerable once you’ve had the good stuff. So, 1 cup black, 1 cup white, 1 cup green, and 1 cut Moracan mint tea. That puts my percentage at 296% !
That’s one time you don’t want to hear the doc say “OOPS!”..................
Isn’t marijuana good for glucoma?
Supplsed ly......................
A healthy diet overall helps glaucoma. I have seen that being obese and having diabetes increases glaucoma risk by 2-3X
I'm guessing they broke that sample out because blacks have high cancer rates--maybe the preventive effect was particularly strong among black women.
Never get off the boat!
I have been prescribed eye drops to treat my present glaucoma. The presumption (or hope) is this will slow down the deterioration of eyesight. I don’t think there is anything that can restore my vision to the way it was some 10 years ago. I now refrain from night driving whenever I have the choice. I drink Green Tea. This may also help preserve what’s left of my eyesight.
Study funded by the British Tea Growers association....?
Tiny hole ...
Tea is a broad category. Any specifics on what type?
