NEW YORK - A rare first printing of the U.S. Constitution sold at Sotheby’s in New York for $43.2 million, a record price for a document or book sold at auction.

The buyer, Chicago hedge fund manager Kenneth Griffin, will loan the document to the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, for public exhibition, Sotheby’s announced Friday.

Griffin, founder and CEO of multinational hedge fund Citadel, outbid a group of 17,000 cryptocurrency enthusiasts from around the world who crowdfunded to buy it over the last week.

“The U.S. Constitution is a sacred document that enshrines the rights of every American and all those who aspire to be,” Griffin said in a statement. “That is why I intend to ensure that this copy of our Constitution will be available for all Americans and visitors to view and appreciate in our museums and other public spaces.”

Crystal Bridges board chairperson Olivia Walton said, “We are honored to exhibit one of the most important documents in our nation’s history from our location in the heartland of America.”

The museum opened in 2011 and was founded by Alice Walton, the daughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton.

Very cool.

I’d like to see how he encapsules it to maintain preservation.

Just keep away from any Louie V stuff and it should be safe in Chicago.

Crystal Bridges is a terrific art museum. It’s a blessing to have it in this part of the country. They currently enforce a mask mandate though. Bummer.

... $43.2M for rare first printing of U.S. Constitution..."

Yeah, yeah - It's nice that the physical thing this is being
preserved - but until a majority of people stop valuing
SYMBOL over SUBSTANCE, we will not have a decent country
to live in - and human freedom and intelligence will continue
to evaporate, disappear and be destroyed on this planet.
And our material prosperity along with them.

Just my view from my personal 'Shrugging' corner.

Sometimes, without the symbol, the substance becomes irretrievable - I like that he values the Constitution itself.

"...the substance becomes irretrievable..."

The important questions are:

1. Are enough Americans now willing to endure the hardship,
and do the work, to retrieve the substance?

2. Are enough of them even intellectually capable of it?
Or to even comprehend what they have LOST?

3. Do enough of them even give a damn anyway?

I believe there are enough. Barely enough to get started when it jumps off. Hopefully enough to finish it through.

Glad to see it wasn’t a Chinese billionaire that bought it.
