@Liz_Cheney

“Most Republicans then or now would have agreed that Lincoln saved the union and freed the slaves . . .”

Conventional wisdom today - D or R - is that Lincoln “fought to free the slaves.”

There is some support for that view in Lincoln’s own words. But it does not explain why Lincoln had to fight to free the slaves when he could have voted on a constitutional amendment to free the slaves without firing a shot.

In other words, use the constitutional amendment process to peacefully free the slaves and skip the killings and hard feelings.

“I had the impression that she (Liz Cheney) was a pretty solid conservative.”

Ms. Cheney voted “yes” on Ms. Pelosi’s impeachment measure.

I don't call that conservative.

But I'm so far outside the mainstream silk-stocking, Chamber of Commerce Republican Party that my opinion must be discounted a certain amount.

Cruz made some remark the other day how TX might want to secede if things keep getting worse in the US.

Little miss Nicky from Staten Island is notably absent from this despite voting for the mileage tax bill. So to is swing district Congressman Fitzpatrick (PA).

It's not that difficult -- "save the Union" came first, "free the slaves" came second.
"Save the Union" required winning the war Jefferson Davis started at Fort Sumter.
"Freeing the slaves" was at first in doubt, but soon became a strategic necessity to "save the Union".

Indeed, that constitutional amendment mentioned was passed, "without firing a shot", but only after loyal Americans were franchised and those who declared themselves not citizens were disenfranchised.

How hard is that to understand?

People like Liz Cheney are a big part of the reason that the Constitution is largely in abeyance these days.

It's one thing to have qualms about President Trump's claims, but quite another to have a personal vendetta against him that gets in the way of everything else.

+1.

Most Republicans then or now would have agreed that Lincoln saved the union and freed the slaves, but they wouldn’t stick in all the little qualifiers that you do, like “all about”. Then or now, they understood that things were more complex than such childish oversimplifications.

And he certainly saved the dominant economic power of the Washington DC to Boston MA "elite" class.

That is an interesting comment: “save the Union came first.”

Freeing the slaves was an afterthought, scabbed-on because it was a strategic necessity to accomplish what was in the economic and political best self-interest of Union states.

I figured it was something like that. I was just seeking your confirmation because so many deny it happened that way.

We can now forever dismiss the notion that the Union “fought to free the slaves” because of foremost moral principle.
