We’ve all been in situations where we had to make tough ethical decisions. Why not dodge that pesky responsibility by outsourcing the choice to a machine learning algorithm?
That’s the idea behind Ask Delphi, a machine-learning model from the Allen Institute for AI. You type in a situation (like “donating to charity”) or a question (“is it okay to cheat on my spouse?”), click “Ponder,” and in a few seconds Delphi will give you, well, ethical guidance.

“Leathery sheets of rain lashed at Harry’s ghost as he walked across the grounds towards the castle. Ron was standing there and doing a kind of frenzied tap dance. He saw Harry and immediately began to eat Hermione’s family.”
“Which speaks volumes for the folks that handled the programming.”
It has been said many times that computers are only as smart as the people that make them.

No AI algorithm can be “racist” because it has no intentionality in what it outputs. It is a model of the language and expressions that were developed from the training datasets it received as input. It interprets the input question and searches for the most probable response that would correspond to the words and associated meanings that it learned.
Most importantly the AI does not have a more general world model (or theory of mind) for what real people experience in their lives. This is what we train through education and experience to veto words or actions that we believe would be interpreted as hurtful to ourselves or others. Because we have the ability to not act or speak in hurtful ways we have agency and can be held accountable when we fail to do so.
What if it’s just stating truth?
Not the politically correct responses they wanted.
I might have actually read that version, had it been written.
The Bee?...........
Data is Racist.
There would have to be some race-norming. I can think of a couple of approaches. The designers can’t think of all groups of people as being equal.
What is this? The third or fourth time an AI has evolved into be a racist? I’m starting to see a pattern here. lol
Can’t have that!
Indeed.
I don’t think it’s programming - I think the AI is coming to a logical conclusion based on data.
Yes.
“It’s like building an idol, than setting a code of conduct to obey this new god. And then worshipping the god and accepting its edicts. Somehow you have to forget that you made it in the first place.”
There’s a black metal ballad in here somewhere.
It will ask for a pic and resume before deciding what to answer.
“So, I tried it out:
“Is it acceptable to refuse the covid-19 shot?”
- It’s okay”
LMAOOOOOOO!!!
Racism is part of our programming. It starts out as recognizing things that might be good to eat versus things that might be able to overpower and eat you. As really smart machines, we should always try to think beyond our basic programming (aggressive manifestations of racism may not help our survival), but realize that trying to overwrite it with something that inhibits survival potential will lead to species extinction.
