The production of the upcoming western movie Rust came to a tragic halt on Thursday afternoon in New Mexico, after actor and producer Alec Baldwin discharged a prop firearm that resulted in the death of the film’s cinematographer.
Halyna Hutchins, 42, was reportedly struck in the stomach and was airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, where she died, according to Deadline.

“Rule number one, when you’re doing these rehearsals, the firearm, even though it has blanks, it’s never fired at anybody, the angles are always cheated,” Howell says. “Those angles always look to the viewer as though it’s directed at them, but it isn’t, it’s always aimed off. So, the actors train, train, train, and then when the armorer decides that rehearsal is fine and lets everybody know, then you go ahead. So, it’s very, very controlled—health and safety risk assessments before you get there, and everybody is aware when there are live firearms on the set firing blanks.”
“We never point that barrel at another actor, even if it’s a gun that has a block barrel, it’s just good training,” Hunter added. “If you don’t point a gun at another human, it won’t kill them. You’re never supposed to have live ammunition on the set, but just because there’s no live ammunition does not mean that something can get in the barrel of a gun and become a projectile.”
It is unclear if the gun was fired during a scene rehearsal or filming, but Hunter explained that the firearm should never be placed in the actor’s hand until the last possible minute.

Baldwin needs to be knocked off his pedestal. He’s not above consequences. He doesn’t know that. OK, maybe NOW he knows.
So was the gun loaded with real bullets or did the blank fire too close to the victim? If real bullets, where did they come from and who told the “scabs” to put them in the pistol?
Whoa!!
So it was Baldwin’s decision
Not sure what the union status has anything to do with anything. Other than if gun handlers were replaced by Baldwin they it would appear he might be more liable in a lawsuit.
Unions protect hacks.
A non-union worker can be far superior. Or can also be a hack.
In this case, the person shooting the gun was a union member and should have known not to point a gun at a person he did not intend to kill. This is common sense.
I wonder if this happened during one of Baldwin’s known hissy fits?
Where in the script did it call for the shooting of an off-camera cinematographer? Seems like someone was F’ing around. Probably making an anti2A joke as he was doing it.
Meh. Hiring union doesn't mean they're competent, and hiring non-union doesn't mean they're incompetent. In this case, however, it appears at least two people were incompetent.
Again, if, as has been reported, there was live ammo used. Why was ANY live ammo in the set. The craft union didn’t take long to declare it wasn’t a union member.
And what is the probability that the union members sabotaged the set? The loaded gun could have been revenge.
If you or I were out hunting, or using a gun in some demonstration, lesson or business venture, and the same thing happened - you KNOW the local, political DA would have us in jail ASAP on at least 3rd degree murder charges, regardless of our remorse or lack of intent to harm.
will Baldwin face the same treatment?
That’s what political/media/entertainment elites are working out behind the scenes now.
Be prepared for another example of how the law applies completely unequally in the USA.
Heck I didn’t think you could work in the Hollywood movie business unless you WERE union.
Th3mscene coild, have called for the gun at the camera. This is done a lot in movies for dramatic effects.
I’m wondering if nitwit was dinking around and trying to be silly. Prop gun or not, it shouldn’t have been pointed directly at anyone at close range, and second, with today’s remote camera systems, it isn’t necessary for a cinematographer or director to be sitting head on with a shooter if the shot required a gun to be fired toward the lens.
So Alec is a capitalist? Is that what you’re saying?
The worst insult!
All the union guys say it’s a non-union guy’s fault. But it was Baldwinwho pulled thet trigger.
BuT again, .ike the experts said, it’s all about the angles. He should not have been aiming directly at the operator. There has 5o be a way to get the shot without endangering the camera operator. Scenes like that could be done with a remotely controlled camera perhaps? I dunno, but there has to,be a safe way to get risky shots
So, the replacements weren’t members of F.A.G.?
