Alec Baldwin asked why was he given ‘hot gun’ after fatal film set shooting

A distraught Alec Baldwin repeatedly asked why was he given a “hot gun” after his prop weapon accidentally discharged on his New Mexico film set Thursday, killing a cinematographer and injuring the director, witnesses have claimed.

The tragic accident unfolded while Baldwin was filming his upcoming western film “Rust” at Bonanza Creek Ranch in Sante Fe.

Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, died and director, Joel Souza, 48, was injured after they were both struck when the gun discharged, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said.

Immediately after the incident, an eyewitness told Hollywood gossip site Showbiz 411 that Baldwin started asking how he could have been given a “hot gun” – meaning a firearm loaded with real ammunition.

“In all my years, I’ve never been handed a hot gun,” the actor allegedly kept saying.

Guns make lots of money for the entertainment industry.

” for the same reason a prop gun could be designed to chamber an odd sized blank but not real ammo. “

This is the way I assumed they were. I guess not.

Q.
Is the media that ferocious on Alec Baldwin as in 2006 on Dick Cheney?

Probably because that was the shot the director called for. Life in movies often goes against normal gun safety rules. Which is why they’re supposed to have prop guys making extra sure that doesn’t end poorly.

I should modify that: If it was something other than live ammunition, then perhaps there is scenario where Baldwin is purely innocent. But I am hard pressed to imagine what other than live ammo could kill one person and put a second in the hospital.

One would think a real gun would feel different and be heavier than a prop gun. One would also think he would check it to make sure.

Now, which crew person wanted the guy dead?

I agree - had to be a live round. I suppose one other aspect of this is that he was the producer as well, and so should have known if there were other parts of the movie in which live rounds were being used.

That might be the key issue. If they were also using those guns to fire live rounds, and so there were live rounds actually on set, then his degree of caution should have been greatly elevated. But if there were no live rounds being used at all, then this almost amounts to murder by whomever brought them to the set and out them in that gun.

Ah, pays to read the article. Ok, so it was a loaded prop gun. Still, Baldwin should have checked it.

Jon-Erik Hexum was stupid enough to put a loaded prop gun to his head. There have been others.

Remember this was after the House Managers, headed by Representative Henry Hyde, passed the Clinton Impeachment referral for the House vote.

He was actually killed by a blank. He had the gun to his temple when he pulled the trigger and the "wad" killed him.

Pretty much the only time true prop guns (ie not real guns) are used is if they’re staying in a visible holster through the entire shot, nobody in the industry likes those fake guns for anything where they’re visible, they don’t look right, they don’t have moving parts. The rest of the time it’s a gun, which is a prop in that everything an actor touches is a prop (anything they don’t touch is decoration).

I don’t know. One would assume a prop gun could not chamber real ammo but then I have heard stories where there was somehow a mix up. I have never seen a prop gun up close do I don’t know how they are made.

Looking at this as a plaintiff’s lawyer, I’d have to ask why there was live ammo on set at all. Just to shoot some closeups with realistic recoil? What other legitimate purpose could there be? Were they going to hold a Cowboy Action competition with the props after filming just for fun? Does someone have a carry piece in .44 Russian and just left it laying around?

And if there was a legitimate reason to have live ammo around, then absolutely, there was no good reason for Baldwin to point the gun at someone and drop the hammer without making sure it wasn’t loaded with live ammo. “I’ve always trusted the prop guy” isn’t going to cut it in court, at least with regard to civil liability.

# they were both struck when the gun discharged

Notice the wording. Like the gun just fired itself, with no assistance whatsoever from the idiot who actually pulled the trigger.

# Why would live ammunition be anywhere near the set? It could not have been just wadding from a blank.

I question that as well. If this is common practice, it’s surprising it doesn’t happen more often.

The actors depend on the prop people in these situations, it is their responsibility to make sure these things do not happen, not the actors. Most don’t even have any idea about guns in the first place. Whatever it was , it was a horrible accident and Baldwin will have to live with this the rest of his life.
