A jury on Thursday found a Virginia man, accused of shooting his next-door neighbor, guilty of first-degree murder.
Michael Hetle, a 52-year-old former police officer and NASA executive, shot 24-year-old Javon Prather seven times, a video of which was caught by a Ring doorbell camera, local news outlet WTOP reported.
Hetle and Prather had feuded for years, arguing over mundane things like dog poop and loud music, according to local news outlets. Since 2016, Hetle has called the police to complain about barking dog noises coming from Prather's house, WTOP said.
Before the jury, Hetle's attorney argued that he acted in self-defense. Hetle said he believed Prather was armed and claimed to have been threatened by him multiple times ahead of the shooting.
Prosecutors, however, said it was "not self-defense, that it was murder in the first degree, which is murder with malice and murder with premeditation."
The video, according to local news reports, shows Hetle firing several rounds at Prather in March 2020 while other neighbors watched. Prather's wife was among the onlookers.
Prather had knocked on Hetle's door, and Hetle then fired six times at him while Prather tried to run off his doorstep, according to the Washington Post.
Prather collapsed on Hetle's driveway, and Hetle fired another time before turning to Prather's wife.
"You want it too?" he asked, according to the Post, pointing toward his gun.

Sorry in my book thats justifiable homicide
Don’t start nothing there won’t be nothing.
Last time there was a ‘dog poop’ issue in my yard my lab-pit mix ‘puppy’ dealt with the offender. His sense-of-entitlement was checked by a clean, bone-deep cut from his collarbone to his stomach.
Yeah, but Nowak was a redhead. You know what they say about redheads on the Hot-Crazy Matrix.
Good friend of mine lived in a townhome and his next door neighbor played loud music until 2-3 a.m. every morning. Nothing he said or did worked until he went to Goodwill and bought an 8 track player, couple speakers and an 8 track of Iron Butterfly with In a Gadda Da Vida.
Got up and got ready to go to work, put the two speakers up to the wall that he shared with the neighbor, popped the tape in and went to work. Playing of music until 2-3 a.m. stopped.
You want it too.... Great campaign slogan.
Trump 2024, “By Now You Want it 2”
Maybe you hate the things he said not to vote for him the last time.
If you don’t Vote Trump in 2024 it will definitely be your last time.
The Globalist’s have a plan for 2030 and it doesn’t you or anyone you know.
Can you Imagine Obama’s Fourth-Year - don’t tell anybody, “You want it too!”
They had shared walls—fence could not have helped in this case.
That’s when you tell the police you’re a permit holder and will take care of the issue yourself then.
His own Ring video convicted him... what a maroon. I know an evil idiot who could be this guy’s clone.
So Javon comes over and knock on Mike’s door. Mike, not being an idiot see who it is along with a group of “neighbors” through his Ring camera and arms himself. Javon says some stuff, probably egged on by said “neigbors” and wife, so Mike shoots him and threatens said wife, who in this day and age is probably making threatening statements herself.
Petition for change of venue. Appeal. People need to be able to defend themselves and their home.
Picture having a home and some young people move in across the street always playing loud music, lots of traffic late at night, calls to the cops just result in more bad behavior including threats. Finally they come over to your house in mass, what are you supposed to do? Die?
No crowd, news article doesn’t describe this well at all (shocking), and video doesn’t show the shooting just the aftermath. Something weird is going on with this story and I still don’t see how it’s first degree murder, but otherwise good conviction.
Re: 11 - Agreed.
Thankfully, his life as he knows it is over,
What I find interesting about this case is:
1)This guy made $160k a year, yet he lived in a dumpy townhouse in Springfield.
2)Had to use a public defender.
I bet he managed a budget at NASA, too.
Sometimes you just pack up and move...
The clash of jerks unusually ends very badly for one of them and in this case, both of them. One murdered the other off to prison for a very long time. The theme in any good conceal carry and firearm instruction is self control and the responsibility of having a deadly weapon.
At the end the reporter says “Race did play a role in this deadly incident”
Based on what?
He also had two kills as a police officer.
Most cops do not have any—so they may have been legit but it is a yellow flag for sure...

Clearly what Hetle needed was more range time.
Gaaah! Even worse, “I will always love you” by Whitney Houston, hands down the most obnoxious record ever made. Starts nice then goes into the endless screaming part. Not kidding first time i heard it I laughed as I thought it was a joke with all the ridiculous vocal acrobatics. Speaking of neighbors who kill, I remember a guy in England actually killed a girl who lived in the apartment above him because she would not stop playing that song.
There had been racial slurs traded in the past.
