(The resource area is posted at the end of the the July 3-6 Gardening Thread beginning after post 112!)
We’re finally getting a good rain here in Missouri. I’m going to plant a small bed in front of the cabin in the next few days with baby greens mix for salads.
In Southern Oregon, we got our first sub-freezing morning 9/3.
Potatoes are begging to be dug. Tomatoes are turning red. We had a fabulous cucumber year, but they seem to be about done now.
Good Morning!
:-)
I got almost all my tomatoes and onions pulled.
The potatoes are dying back.
The pumpkin vines are taking over what’s left of the garden like some sci fi movie. I have some of the biggest pumpkins I have ever grown.
I am looking forward to harvesting my bucket potatoes and see what kind of harvest I get and if it was worth the effort.
It was another hot and dry week here in Central Missouri. Rain moved in last night and we are getting a badly-needed drenching today. From the looks of the radar, a lot of people are getting it. This thing stretches from Indianapolis all the way into western Oklahoma.
Might get in the garden to pull weeds tomorrow, but there won’t be any tilling and planting for a few days.
I expect that I’ve got a few gallons of pole beans out there that need to be picked, but me being made out of sugar and all, well I’d straight-up melt if I went outside now.
My rock garden attempt:
Petunias and iceberg roses recovering:
Happy Gardening to all! Fall will be here soon and I'm looking forward to it.
30 pounds +/- of cukes: 3 batches of pickles; one each of B&Bs, sweet chips; and sweet-hot dill chips.
The beans have been shelled & dried: ~1.5 quarts each of blacks & whites.
Still have a pint or two of beets to pickle & process.
Later this coming week, the carrots & rutabagas come out.
I finally got a bit of okra, so made a pot of jambalaya that I had the rest of the rest of the fixings on hand for, just waiting.
The third night, we split a large zuke, and stuffed it with the rest of the batch: 2 cups of uncooked rice makes a LOT of jambalaya for 2 people! We’ll finish it off tonight: the spices get better the longer they have to blend & develop.
Slightly OT, but, this seemed as good a place to ask as any:
Our water is from a shallow well & we have a small whole house water filter that takes the 10” x 2.5” round filter cartridge). The water tastes fine & tests fine, but sometimes does have a bit of sediment in it, therefor the filter.
I was looking at replacement filter cartridges online, and was rather surprised that most did not state flow ratings, and, others stated the same flow ratings for everything they carried, from variable density 5 and 10 micron spun polyester filters for medium sediment filtering to 1 micron spun polyester filters for fine sediment filtering to activated charcoal filters for drinking water filtering: The sources that say anything all state 1 gpm.
1 gpm is really slow! Possibly this is sloppy marketing? But sites like Home Depot don’t seem to provide this info., and going to major mfgr. sites like 3M and GE, this rating is not there either. The wrapper for the last 2-pack of string wound filters I bought is long gone (from Rural King, brand unknown, but some cheap string filters shed their own fibers - sheesh! while back I found a very old pleated filter @ my Dad’s with a rating of 10 gpm, but, the material is so old it’s brittle. No help there...
Generally, asking the bigger companies is a roll of the dice as to whether one will get a reply, or, anytime soon. And Filtrete (3M), for example, doesn’t have a chat option for questions...
I’m thinking my best bet is to go on Amazon (yeah, I know...) and query sellers, looking for a rating of 5-10 gpm. But, I’m open to other ideas and input.
I’d also certainly be interested in other’s experience with the variable density spun polyester filters, as I’ve not tried those.
Thanks!
