Pi has been calculated to an astonishing 62.8 trillion figures by a team of Swiss scientists who spent 108 days working it up - 3.5 times as fast as the previous record.
The previous record was calculated to 50 trillion figures, and was set in 2020, said experts from Graubuenden University of Applied Sciences in Chur, Switzerland.
Researchers haven't revealed the exact numbers involved in the extra 12.8 trillion digits, as they are waiting on the Guinness Book of Records to certify their achievement, but say the final 10 digits they discovered are '7817924262'.
The number π (pi) is a constant in mathematics that is roughly equal to 3.14159, and is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter.
The previous record of 50 trillion digits was set by Timothy Mullican from the US, who achieved the feat after eight months of processing in January 2020.

What is mathematically interesting is that pi has no regularity or repetition.
This means that it is impossible to specify pi exactly as a decimal point.
It means you can only get closer and closer to the exact number, never achieving the exact number.
This makes it a 'transcendent' number, according to the Swiss data scientists.

Heh. Reminds me of my college surveying class where we had to calculate our position using the location of the sun. It had to be figured to something like 20 decimals, which was beyond the capability of our calculators at the time. The professor taught us some trick on how to figure it out. I have no idea how now - but perhaps the square root function was involved???
Your screen name says it all...

Coincidence?
Wait til the beginning *really* comes to life.

Now you're not going to find them easy to follow. They're not using normal procedures; they're using some kind of code.
In your study of the history of pi, have you learned why that particular character of the Greek alphabet was assigned? Was it in premonitional deference to a certain baked good?
That would be an equilateral triangle.
They have a Ph.D. in graft, and a Master's in Deception.
In my calculation, the last seven digits were 8675309
I was thinking that finally there’s some precision in making a circle.
pi r’nt square. pi r round.
Cornbread r square.
Meanwhile, from a distance the circle still appears to be round
Your respective calculations remind me of a butcher in Queens who kept telling customers it’s getting harder to make both ends meat.
I think that what you teacher actually said was that, given a supposed diameter of the universe of, say, 28 billion light-years, knowing pi to 37 digits was sufficient to calculate the circumference of the universe with an error of less than the size of a typical virus.
Regards,
Well, that’s a pretty decent approximation I guess.
Ancient (and modern) Greeks pronounced the letter pi more like “pee” which would bring an image to mind other than a baked good.
Are mathematicians “scientists”? Is mathematics a science? At first I thought “No”. But I suppose so. It Is A Field Of Knowledge. It Is Reproducible.
It’s certainly more of a science than the fantastical witches brew of Virology, or the story telling of evolution, or what passes for astro physics today. A lot of what passes for Science today is not science, is not scientific.
Where There Is Government Money Given, There Is Fraud And Corruption.
Lemme know when you get to the message at the end: “Hey there, took yah long enough! Now click your heels three times and you’ll get a surprise!”
Until then, go way.
We know the exact value of pi: 22/7.
It’s only when we try to express that as a decimal do we get these long decimal places.
If I’da known that in physics class, I coulda told the teacher I can’t answer the problems re PI cause my paper isn’t big enough.
Sine ... Cosine ... Cosine ... Sine ... 3.14159 !!! [Math Nerd Cheer]
