Don’t look now, but Yankees are MLB’s hottest team

Sometimes the numbers DO lie.

The New York Yankees have no less than 15 players sidelined by injury or COVID-19. But that hasn’t stopped them from being MLB’s hottest team since the All-Star break.

Following the Yankees’ 8-6 win in 11 innings Monday night vs. the Royals, Kansas City PR noted this about New York:

Improved to a Majors-best 16-7 since the break and have won 21 of their last 30 games since Game 2 of their July 4 doubleheader, after falling to an even 41-41 in Game 1 … they’ve outscored opponents 133-103 (+30) over the last 30 games, and are a season-high-tying 12 games over .500

The Yankees are in third place in the American League East, six games behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays. New York trails the Boston Red Sox and Oakland A’s by two games in the American League Wild-Card race.

FanGraphs reports the Yankees have a 52.9% chance of making the playoffs, with a 14% chance of winning the division and 38.9% chance of qualifying as a wild card.

“actually, it the first place Phillies”

Nope. It’s the Giants.

Consistently the best team in Baseball over the entire season so far. It the Dodgers go 7-3 over 10 games, the Giants go 8-2. Relentless.

They sit at .634 atop the toughest division, by far.

And are on their way to a 100 win season.

Well I came along late to the party. Never followed baseball at all until meeting my husband in 2004, then took a few years before I actually started following the games very much. Gardie is very gritty, IMO, and he NEVER, EVER gives up. He might not have the best hitting average, but if anyone’s going to make the opponent’s ace pitcher waste 9 or 10 pitches, it is Gardie. I have to think that he’s supportive in the dugout, and helps some of the up-and-coming younger players to keep their perspective. He is almost never sick or “injured”, and is available to play game after game after game.

Great game last night. The Royals became the first team in baseball history to overcome deficits in the seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth innings. They gave up the lead in the top of the inning and came back to tie it in the bottom of the inning for four consecutive innings. Came up short in the 11th inning. Yankee bullpen records four blown saves in one game.

I think it’s funny, how some people come in here, and say who cares, they don’t care, etc.

How many WS Titles and Hall of Famers do they have compared with the Yankees? Asking for a friend.

I’m sure the discussion is about how Tampa Bay has done well the past few years with a much smaller payroll than big market teams such as the Yankees. If you want to talk about all of baseball history, I’m sure the Yankees have won more World Series than any other team.

So what have they won exactly in the past few years? Maybe if they spent some money they may win the WS or at least get a decent stadium. Tampa Bay Statdium is one of the worst, if not the worst stadium in the MLB.

Grew up in NJ. Been a NYY fan my entire life. Have a pic of me with Mantle and Martin. My signed Thurman Munson baseball is one of my favorite possessions.

That said, most crap organizations can spend $202,000,000 and create a decent team. Not many can do the same with just $67,000,000. There can be no argument that the Rays are a superior managed organization. Which, of course, was my point.

I miss the days when your team had the same players on it year after year and you created a bond that lasted a lifetime. That was when baseball deserved to be the national pastime. Ironically, it was Steinbrenner who ruined the game with free agency. His first big hire was Catfish Hunter. I happened to see him pitch his first game at the old stadium.
