When superstar gymnast Simone Biles withdrew from team competition this past week at the Tokyo Olympics, citing emotional exhaustion that was hampering her ability to perform, the world gasped. It seemed not to know what to make of a top athlete — and, in Biles’ case, a cultural phenomenon and a singular force in gymnastics — choosing to step away from a game while it was still in play, especially the Olympics, the most venerated of sporting events.
The flip side of the "she doesn't owe white people anything" (i.e., most fans/members of the public), will be the eventual recognition by many of those fans/customers that they don't owe the athletes anything either. And considering that professional athletes are marketing the luxury good of entertainment, that may not be a wise long-term strategy.
Ritalin not allowed in japan for adhd. That could be the cause
Yes, I fully expect a very special interview with Oprah will happen. It will be promoted as a tell all, special event, similar to how Oprah’s interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry was promoted.
It’s been that way for decades — even for as long as I can remember. That’s because the U.S. Olympic teams are supported mainly by corporate sponsors, and corporations would much rather sponsor individuals than teams.
Except she isn't GOAT.
The greatest Olympic gymnast in history is the Russian Larisa Latynina who won NINE golds (plus another 9 other medals) as compared to Simone Biles 4 golds.
It's not even close.
she entered the Olympics, she has tons of endorsements and commercials
Except she doesn't. Some endorsements yes, not “tons”.
And she is far less rich than she should have been.
Bad coaching, it was her coaches job to see to it that she was mentally able to compete. If he/she could not do that he/she had a responsibility to resign and let some other coach try. Nothing says BIG PROBLEMS AHEAD like a good coach resigning.
Good point. Thanks.
So DON'T go to the Olympics and waste everybody's time. Stay at home.
stupid article. she was taking ritalin. it kept her calm. ritalin is banned in Japan. so she could not take ritalin while competing.
her stress levels went through the roof.
understandable that she withdrew.
Finally. Thank you for telling your story.
Ah we can all dream can’t we
A final note Simone Biles is 24-years old, she’s not a child she’s a grown woman maybe if more people treated her more like an adult she wouldn’t be having so many issues
And just how would you know this?
And even if that were the case, she didn’t know her medication was banned in Japan so she could bring enough to last her two weeks like everyone else?
Simone Biles and the New Black Power of ‘No’ I will not do the thing I was supposed to do, but I want all the publicity and perks as if I had actually done what I was supposed to do.
A new take on the welfare state for athletes. Free stuff with no work requirement.
Athletes from the 20th century are spinning in their graves or rocking rapidly in their wheelchairs, spraying spittle all over everyone nearby.
*Carrying the banner of America and all the ideals therein has always been problematic for Black people. But these days, it can be downright traumatizing.*
Spencer Heywood stood in for Lew Alcindor and won the gold. Tom Burleson did the same for Bill Walton and ‘settled for the silver.
Traumatizing? Only when there’s more in it for being a drama queen.
When it comes to the mental side of sports, I don’t think it’s even possible to “coach” something that isn’t already there.
Her ritalin use was discussed on the Joe Rogan show. I assumed that was true. however this latest article says she was allowed to take her ritalin.

So I’m not sure what to think.
She could not sneak ritalin into the country. it wouldn’t work because they do blood tests. It would show up in her blood tests.
These are extremely high performance athletes. It doesn’t take much to throw them off.
The speculation in the article posted is just communist narrative constructs.
What’s the best way to respond to a non sequitur?
↑ Upvote.
” I remember watching Flo Jo back in 1988 just demolish her opponents and there was none of that “she’s black!” crap then. She was as American as apple pie.”
You can say that again. I watched the heck out of those Games, and not once do I recall hearing the term “African American”, let alone anything PC.
